In the series about a young singer and a cult leader, even the music failed.
The new series "Idol" with Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd in the lead roles starts on HBO Max in a week. It will tell the story of a young singer who meets a fashion club owner who has created a religious cult.
The project received not at all flattering ratings from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has only 9% "freshness" based on 11 professional reviews. Here is what they write.
1. “The script seems to be designed to make viewers think they are watching how Hollywood works, when in reality a lot comes down to tasteless clichés.” Variety
2. “What Levinson [showrunner, creator of Euphoria] perceives as provocative. How can a series with so much nudity, sex and eroticism be so tasteless? — Collider
3. “We [viewers] understand that there is no sexuality in Idol, despite all the beauty of Depp. On the contrary, it's more like cheap and torture porn." Evening Standard
4. “Imagine your favorite 4-star restaurant started serving defrosted fast food.
<...> "Idol" is gloomy, vile and vulgar. It's full of ridiculous old ideas and porn-like sex. It would be appropriate for HBO Cinemax, but not for mainstream HBO, which loves to compete for Emmys." Showbiz 4115. "Even the music here is terrible" Daily Telegraph
The series premieres on HBO Max on June 4th. Are you planning to watch it, or have the critics dissuaded you?
