Vulture named the 100 most difficult game levels of all time

Journalists from Vulture collected ranking of the 100 hardest levels in video game history, from NES to PS5.

A place in the top levels deserved for various reasons: in some you need to spend too much time for the passage, somewhere you need an incredible reaction speed, and somewhere the puzzles break too much head. At the same time, the authors preferred levels and games, after passing which you feel satisfaction from the work done, and do not doubt whether it was a bug.

Here's what the top 10 looks like:

10. Invading Hell (Devil May Cry 3)

Mission 18, in which Dante needs to re-fight the bosses that were encountered in the passage earlier. Only this time you need to deal with all nine in a row. Adding to the problems was the fact that the original American release had problems with the balance of difficulty.

9. Alien's Lair (Contra)

The final level of the classic shooter with a narrow hallway, flying enemies and a giant boss.

8. Chamber 15 (Portal)

This level is a kind of exam in which the player must prove that he has mastered all the mechanics and tricks that he was taught earlier.

7. Castle Water Hall (Resident Evil 4)

In addition to the need to count bullets, fight off an endless stream of cultists and solve puzzles, in this location the hero also needs to protect the president's daughter from enemy attacks.

6. Through the Fire and Flames (Guitar Hero 3)

The breakneck 8-minute track divided the rhythm games into before and after. He showed that such games can test not only the sense of rhythm, but also endurance.

5. Jungle

The second world of the popular 2D platformer was not distinguished by indulgence to the players: here you need to dodge literally everything, and any mistake returns you to the beginning of the level.

4. Anor Londo (Dark Souls)

Without games in the Souls series, such a rating simply could not do. In this location, the hero will be constantly rained with arrows of arrows, forced to fight giants and try not to fall off a cliff (which, of course, will happen more than a dozen times before the first passing).

3. The Kid (Super Meat Boy)

Another game that begs to be added to this list. The Kid is a hidden arena in the fifth world that requires you to make impossible jumps with the highest accuracy and speed.

2. The Mountain (The Witness)

As with Portal, this level tests everything the player had to learn before. Complex puzzles can take hours or even days to solve.

1. Turbo Tunnel (Battletoads)

For those who played the first Battletoads as a child, this level was clearly a nightmare for a long time. This is a cruel and unfair test of reaction speed, which not everyone could pass.

Surprisingly, the helicopter missions from GTA: Vice City are not on the list. But in place 32, the no less annoying “Wrong Side of the Rail” from San Andreas is the one where you need to follow the train.
