YouTube is testing an ad blocker ban
Miscellaneous / / May 11, 2023
Users are prompted to choose between viewing ads and a Premium subscription.
In the YouTube community on Reddit appeared a screenshot hinting at the upcoming blocking of the adblock in the service. This is a warning window that YouTube does not allow ad blockers.
The banner elaborates that the ad allows billions of users around the world to watch YouTube for free. If ads are annoying, it's worth signing up for a YouTube Premium subscription so that content creators can continue to make money.
The author did not indicate whether he was able to close the banner and continue playing, or whether the warning disappeared after refreshing the page.
A community moderator contacted a YouTube employee and was able to confirm, that so far this is really only an experiment, but it was not possible to get additional comments.
In the comments to the original post, users note that if blockers are banned, they will either stop using YouTube or reduce viewing to the required minimum. Many also speculate that adblock services will be able to bypass this limitation and continue to work.
