Archaeologists of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH) discovered a rare statue of the god Kavil (K'awil). Maya considered him the lord of the elements, causing earthquakes and thunderstorms.
The find is a lid for an urn in the shape of Cavil's head. An image of a certain deity was also found on the urn itself. Scientists do not exclude that this is Kinich Ahau, the Mayan god of the Sun.
In various manuscripts, Cavil is depicted with a zoomorphic head and large eyes, as well as with a thin snake-like leg, symbolizing lightning. And usually these are drawings. The new statue is one of the few three-dimensional depictions of the ancient deity and the first to be discovered in Mexico. Prior to this, three such finds had been made in Guatemala.
The head of Cavil was discovered during archaeological work before laying the tracks for the future "Maya Train". This is a railway with a length of more than 1,500 kilometers, thanks to which tourists will be able to see previously inaccessible places associated with this civilization. The construction of the highway should be completed in 2024.
