Apple releases urgent security update for iPhone and iPad
Miscellaneous / / May 02, 2023
This is the first public update of the new type. With installation it is better not to pull.
Shortly after the release of the iOS / iPadOS 16.4.1 interim update, users received another update with the same number, but with an (a) at the end. This is a light little patch that fixes the reported security bugs.
The update is called the iOS Rapid Security Response. The name may be familiar to users of Apple's beta firmware, but regular iOS users are seeing it for the first time.
Such updates are usually installed in a couple of minutes and sometimes do not even require a reboot of the device after completion (although not in this case). They focus on quickly fixing known vulnerabilities and don't add new features.
Also in the auto-update settings there is a switch for a new type of updates. Given that RSR cases are always about security, this item should be left enabled.

It is noted that such notifications can only be installed on top of the newest version of iOS / iPadOS: that is, conditional iOS 16.5.1 (a) on iOS 16.5 will not immediately get up, because there is still a standard update between them 16.5.1.
