Liters of blood, bloodthirsty mother and gags. "Rise of the Evil Dead" laughs and scares the hell out of
Miscellaneous / / April 21, 2023
This horror is more of a remix than a reboot of the franchise.
On April 21, the release of "Rise of the Evil Dead" started. This is the fifth film in the Evil Dead franchise, but it manages to be fresh.
The film was originally scheduled to be released on the streaming platform HBO Max, but during production, distributor Warner Bros. changed plans.
The film was directed and written by Lee Cronin. He has only one feature film to his credit (The Other, in the original The Hole in the Ground), but his lack of experience did not hinder him in any way. One of the producers was Sam Raimi, the author of the first film in the franchise.
Starring Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland, once again, The Evil Dead relies on little-known actors.
Beth finds out she's pregnant. She goes to her older sister Ellie to ask her for advice - Ellie is raising three children alone. But in that house, an ancient book is found that helps spirits to penetrate the human world. evil force takes control of Ellie. Now she is trying to kill her sister and her own children.
A crumpled start doesn't spoil anything
Everything about Rise of the Evil Dead is great, except for the beginning. Lee Cronin had the difficult task of keeping the spirit of the original, but at the same time moving the setting to new locations - an apartment in Los Angeles. Considering the role played by trees and swamps in the original, this was not easy.
In general, Cronin coped with the task, but he needed a rather crumpled start. The introduction of the characters and their relationship with each other also hint that the standard and boring modern horror. It even seems that the film does not belong to the franchise at all.
The beauty is that the start is very short. You can safely sit it out, because all the best is hidden in the middle of the picture.
The movie is scary in every possible way.
The entire Evil Dead franchise balances fear and humor. When the focus shifted, not the best films were made. So, Evil Dead: The Black Book was too serious, trying to scare the viewer to death. "Rise of the Evil Dead" strikes the perfect balance between scary and funny.
To scare, all methods are used. And screamers, and a cheap “look who's behind your shoulder” trick, and natural-looking violence, liters of blood, needles in the eyes and just great makeup. It turns out a whole encyclopedia on how to make the viewer uncomfortable.
Each scene is good in itself, but their compatibility is more pleasing. It's like a brilliant attraction from a person who feels how human addiction works. Once the scene stops being scary, something new happens.
Cronin's real achievement is playing with claustrophobia. The closed space, where danger lurks in every corner, turned out to be almost perfect. Every square meter is saturated with fear. This is somewhat reminiscent of the action scenes from the "Country ghosts”, where work with space, although not at the center of the film, helped to capture the mood.
Laughs and plays with the audience
Most of the jokes are related to motherhood. “Mommy loves you,” says the heroine, looking like a corpse, after which she runs to kill her children. There is no incredible humor in the film that will make you laugh out loud (except for one or two jokes), but the gags brilliantly dilute the pathos of the story.
They also have another, probably more important task - they drive the viewer into a comfort zone. As soon as the viewer smiled and calmed down, liters of blood appear on the screen accompanied by terrible music - and the effect of what he saw only intensifies.
Brings up the topic of family ties
Any good horror movie looks like great material to interpret. "Rise of the Evil Dead" is no exception, so it's not surprising if the viewer perceives it as a statement about relationships. mothers and a child.
At the very beginning of the film, Ellie does not behave like the most sensitive mother, and only after she turns into an evil killer, there is no talk of love and care. At the same time, the aunt becomes the protector of her nephews - as in the recent "M3gan". Perhaps this is a coincidence, or maybe now a similar plot will appear more often.
"Rise of the Evil Dead" does not look like a reboot of the franchise. Rather, it resembles a remix, for which the best elements of the first part were singled out. To view, you do not need to know the plot and details of other "Evil Dead" - all the best of them will appear on the screen anyway.
