It has been called one of the most important works of Western literature of the 20th century.
William Golding's classic novel Lord of the Flies is getting a new adaptation, this time as a TV series. The project will be handled by the BBC. Company announcedthat the show would get four episodes. Each will last one hour.
For the series, a screenwriter has already been found in the person of multiple BAFTA award winner Jack Thorne. Among his recent works is the HBO series "Dark beginnings", based on the book trilogy by Philip Pullman, as well as the film "Secret Garden" (2020) and the duology "Enola Holmes».
Thorne will also executive produce, along with Jamie Campbell and Joel Wilson, who worked on Sex Education. A release date for the new TV adaptation of the book has not yet been announced.
Golding's novel, first published in 1954, tells the story of a group of schoolchildren isolated on an island after a plane crash. With no adults to look after them, children enjoy their casual freedom while living seemingly perfect lives. However, in the group's attempt to remain civilized, including implementing their own leadership system, things gradually deteriorated.
The book received several film adaptations, first in the 1960s by director Peter Brook. And almost 30 years later, in 1990, the novel was re-adapted. As of 2020, another film adaptation by Luca Guadagnino is in the works, although there have been no new details about it for several years.
According to some critics, Golding's work is filled with biblical motifs. It explores the origins of the moral degradation of mankind and the mutation in Western culture.
