Warning: Spoilers for the game and series.
Pedro Pascal gave a big interview with Esquire magazine, in which he spoke about the fate of his character Joel during second season The Last of Us. This topic was also commented on by actress Bella Ramsay (Ellie) and one of the showrunners of the project, Craig Mazin.
Specifically, Pascal spoke about his thoughts on his character's tragic death at the start of the Part II game, on which the TV sequel will be based.
It would be unwise to follow the plot of the first part of the game in order to seriously deviate from the set path as a result. So to be honest, I'm ready for this outcome.

Recall that in the video game Joel is brutally dealt with by a girl named Abby. This is the daughter of a surgeon whom the protagonist killed in the first part of the game and the first season of the series.
The showrunner of the project also did not rule out the death of a key character in the second season. However, he noted that he did not have the intention to follow the plot of the original in everything.
You already understood that I'm not afraid to kill characters. But it's important to note that neither I nor Neil Druckman [the series' co-showrunner and creator of the game] feel that the original source limits us in any way.

But Bella Ramsay is more sensitive to this. According to her, she is “emotionally not ready” for the death of her cinematic companion.
The second season of The Last of Us is already in development. Most likely it will consist of two parts, and the release will take place at the end of 2024 - the beginning of 2025.
