Why Netflix and A24's The Gnaw is a Must-See
Miscellaneous / / April 06, 2023
This absurd, high-quality and very interesting project will definitely be appreciated by dramedy lovers.
On April 6th, the TV series "The Gnaw" premiered on Netflix. The story of people chasing each other after a collision on the road is both amusing and sad at the same time.
The showrunner of the project was Lee Sun-jin - he is known as a screenwriter and producer of "Silicon Valley". For "Gnaw" he wrote the screenplay and also directed the final, tenth episode. The six episodes were directed by Jake Schreier, who worked on Kidding and Shameless, but is more popular as a music video director (he made videos for Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and many other stars).
Starring Steven Yan (The Walking Dead,Minariβ) and stand-up comic Ali Wong.
The series is about two people who were never supposed to meet. Danny tries to make money in construction - it turns out badly, and it drives the man crazy. Amy lives in a beautiful house and enters into multimillion-dollar contracts. The heroes are in the same city, but there is nothing in common between them. Everything turns upside down when Amy cuts off Danny in the parking lot. He chases after her
take revenge, but he only manages to remember the number of the car. From that moment on, he tries to ruin the girl's life - Amy answers him the same.Interesting heroes
From the very beginning, the series shows two completely different lives. Danny has no money, few friends, and personal ambitions have long been reduced to somehow providing for his parents. They lost their business because of their son, so he feels guilty and wants to make amends. Danny begins to pursue Amy, not only because she cut him, the hero is jealous of her.
This girl has a great life. A good family, prosperity, but she lacks emotions. Her main pastime is masturbation with a gun, which says a lot about her. The fight with Danny is an attempt to get new experiences. She decides to take his friend away from him, and it turns out that even a false affair gives her more happiness than communication with her husband.
Both main characters are interesting in their own right and deserve solo series. It's doubly nice when the two of them appear on the screen. Each contact allows them to emphasize their features. For example, when Danny finds Amy's house, he pretends to be a repairman who can check the leaking roof. He, of course, is a builder, but the girl would never let him in if she saw the reviews from customers.
Living emotions
Both Danny and Amy smile a lot. In fact, a smile has grown on them - they have to be cheerful in order to conclude contracts. At the same time about happiness there is no question, they both feel bad. And if in the first series it seems that the heroes are just sad, then it gradually becomes clear that their life is perceived by them as a living nightmare.
It is interesting to watch how "Gryznya" smoothly transitions from sad looks into the void to crying uncontrollably. Fortunately, the series has a good script - at the moment when one of the characters is in tears, you can understand their reason. Excellent acting allows you to withstand the degree of emotion without sliding into a farce. Steven Yan stands out in particular: he manages to demonstrate a completely confused and depressed man, who nevertheless believe in the best.
Heightened emotionality is contrasted with the absurd beginning of the story. Sometimes such a contrast hurts, but "Gryznya" only becomes more touching from it.
Actual satire
The humor of the series is epitomized by the scene in which Danny googles the most painless ways to commit suicide. Sometimes heroes find it funny because of the situation they are in. In many ways, "Brawl" resembles other Netflix projects, more "Love" and partly "BoJack HorseΒ».
The show laughs not only at sadness, but also at happiness. Heroes are constantly advised different ways to get rid of negative emotions. Psychology, religion, yoga - the problem is that all this does not help in the end. While Danny and Amy are looking for ways to take out their anger, everyone is trying to explain to them that they shouldn't feel it at all. It's no wonder they focus so much on conflict: it's the raw emotion that's so lacking.
"Gryznya" is a series with an excellent script and excellent actors. It will definitely appeal to fans of dramedy (and even tragicomedies). Studio A24 fans can rejoice: the once market outsider is now taking over the world of TV shows. And this is very good.
