Installing the sink: step by step instructions with which everything will work out
Miscellaneous / / April 06, 2023
Wall, overhead, mortise, with a pedestal and not only - we understand the features of the process for each option.
1. Prepare everything you need
- Sink;
- mixer;
- siphon;
- a set of fasteners;
- silicone sealant;
- sealant gun;
- spatula for silicone;
- perforator or drill;
- screwdriver;
- drill for tiles;
- drill for concrete;
- bubble level;
- pencil or marker;
- roulette;
- wrench;
- hammer;
- jigsaw - optional;
- masking tape - optional;
- hex wrench or two nuts and two wrenches - optional;
- soapy water dispenser;
- soap is optional.
2. Decide on the height
When installing a wall-mounted sink, you can independently choose the installation height, but it is still better to focus on the generally accepted 850 mm to the top of the bowl. For compact washbasins that are positioned above washing machine, it is advisable to select the level by trying on in place and additionally leaving a gap of 20-30 mm to the device cover.
With sinks on cabinets and pedestals, the issue of height is not relevant, since it is already determined by the manufacturer and taken into account in the characteristics of the support or furniture.
3. Markup
Sink with cabinet or pedestal
Set the bowl on a cabinet or pedestal and move it to wall in the right place. Use a level to make sure the sink is level. Check that the structural elements do not block the cold and hot water pipes, as well as the sewer outlet.
It is convenient to draw a vertical line exactly in the center of the installation site, and then find the center of the sink and measure the distances to the holes from this line.
Mark the sink holes with a pencil or marker. In versions with a pedestal - its borders on the left and right, as well as a couple of holes in the transverse bar or back wall through which the structure will be attached. It will be enough to simply glue the bowl itself onto the silicone sealant to the cabinet and to the wall along the joint.
If there is no marker at hand, and the pencil does not write on tiles - stick masking tape on top and make notes on it.
Wall-mounted sink or sink above washer
Cantilever bowls, that is, with fastening directly to the wall, are more convenient to try on with an assistant. Ask him to hold the washbasin at the right height, and mark the location of the mounting holes in the sink or auxiliary brackets for it yourself.
Overhead or recessed sink
Place the washbasin on the countertop and level it, center it or whatever you like. If the bowl is overhead, take into account the place for the mixer next to it.
Mark the position of the drain hole, or circle the sink completely if it is a recessed sink.
4. Install fasteners or make cutouts in the countertop

Drill in the marked places, holes for the size of the dowels. First go through the tile with a ceramic drill at low speed, remembering to periodically moisten it to cool. Next, change the equipment to a concrete drill and finish making holes.
If studs with nuts are used for fastening, screw them into the dowels. Use a hex key for this, which is inserted into the stud.
If there is no hex, try the two-nut method: turn them towards each other at the end of the stud with two wrenches, then screw in the stud by holding one of the nuts.
Overhead or recessed sink
In washbasins of these types, at this stage, instead of installing fasteners, it is necessary to make cutouts in the countertop. For an overhead sink, it is enough to drill a hole with a hole cutter or make a small square window with a jigsaw so that the siphon pipe passes through it.
You will have to tinker with a mortise washbasin. Also, using a jigsaw, cut out the previously marked contour of the sink on the surface so that it freely enters the countertop.
5. Mount the faucet
Mixer can be installed at the very end, but it is better to do it right away, when the sink is not yet fixed and there is free access to it.
Screw the flexible cold and hot water hoses into the faucet and tighten them well by hand.
Pass the hoses into the hole for the faucet in the sink one by one - two at once will not go in due to the size of the nuts.
Insert the faucet into place and fix it on the reverse side with the fastener from the kit. Usually this is a special crescent-shaped bracket with a rubber gasket, which is pressed with a nut on a stud.
If you need more details on installing the faucet, read the step-by-step instructions in separate article.
6. Fasten the sink
Wall-mounted sink, washbasin with pedestal or above the washer
Install the sink on the previously prepared fasteners (studs, brackets) and fix it by hand-tightening the nuts or bolts.
Do not forget about plastic or rubber inserts for fasteners, which are needed so as not to split the ceramic.
Using a level, make sure that the top of the washbasin is perfectly horizontal, then fully tighten the nuts or bolts with a wrench.
Sink with cabinet
Slide the nightstand into place and make sure its top is horizontal. If necessary, level the structure by adjusting the height of the legs. Securely fix the cabinet by screwing bolts or screws into the prepared dowels.
Apply silicone sealant to the top of the cabinet where it meets the sink and carefully install it. Let the material dry for an hour or two.
Overhead or recessed sink
These types of washbasins are perfectly held only by silicone, so it is not worth additionally fixing them at this stage.
7. Seal joints

Apply silicone sealant to the joint between the wall and the sink so that water splashes run into it and not onto floor. Carefully remove the excess with a rubber spatula or just with your finger, after spraying the wall and sink around the sealant with soapy water from a spray bottle. This way the leftovers don't stick where they shouldn't.
Overhead or recessed sink
Apply sealant to the perimeter of the countertop cutout and carefully place the sink on top. Fill the joint with silicone, spray with soapy water and then remove excess by rubbing over with a rubber spatula or finger.
8. Plug in the water
Screw the hoses from the faucet with union nuts onto the cold and hot water outlets - first by hand and then tighten with a wrench.
Do not confuse: hot - on the left, cold - on the right.
If you connect a mixer without instrument taps directly to the main, do not forget to turn off the water at the entrance to the apartment and relieve pressure by opening the nearest mixer. For example, in bathroom.
9. Install a siphon
Assemble the siphon according to the instructions from the kit. Usually the drain is attached to the sink with a stainless steel screw, then the middle part is screwed to it with a water seal in the form of a bend or a glass, and then the siphon is connected to the sewer with a flexible corrugation or tough pipe.
The assembly of the element is simple. The main thing is to follow the instructions, do not forget to install the sealing rings at the joints, directing them with a cone to the edge of the pipe and with a wide part towards the nut.
If you canβt insert the pipe into the sewer pipe, lubricate the rubber cuff with soap.
10. Check the construction
Open the appliance taps on the washbasin or the previously blocked tap at the entrance to the apartment. Turn on the water on the mixer, make sure that hot and cold are not mixed up and everything works. If you suddenly made a mistake - just change the flexible hoses in places, after shutting off the water.
Also check that there are no leaks in the connection areas of the siphon parts. Tighten them if necessary. To make it easier to notice the drops, you can use toilet paper by placing it under the drain.
