Judging by the forecasts, India's lead will only grow in the coming decades.
For the first time in years, China has lost first place in the list of countries with the largest population. According to the World Population Review (WPR), the population of India at the end of 2022 amounted to 1.417 billion people, which is 5 million more than in China (1.412 billion).
According to WPR data as of January 18, the population of India has grown even more and has already amounted to 1.423 billion people. In China, the number has decreased for the first time since the 1960s - by 850 thousand people, follows from the data of the State Statistical Bureau of the PRC.
Experts believe that India, where half of the population is under 30, will become the fastest growing major economy in the world in the coming years. The country urgently needs to create jobs for the millions of people who enter the labor market every year.
The UN predicts that the gap between India and China in terms of population will only grow in the coming years. By 2050, the Indian population may reach 1.688 billion, while China will have 1.317 billion.
The largest increases are expected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
