The creators counted on three, as was the case with "Darkness".
Netflix has canceled the sequel to 1899 from the creators of Darkness. This was told by director Baran bo Odar and screenwriter Jantje Friese. The full text of the message looks like this:
It is with a heavy heart that we are forced to announce that "1899" will not be extended. We'd love to end this incredible adventure with Seasons 2 and 3, just like we did with The Dark. But sometimes not everything goes according to plan. That is life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this amazing journey. We love you. Never forget this.

The action "1899" tells about a group of European immigrants who are sailing on a ship to the United States, but unexpectedly receive a signal from the ship "Prometheus", which disappeared several months ago. They decide to get closer and find out what happened, but get sucked into a nightmare that defies time and logic. Review from Lifehacker can be read Here.
Netflix itself has not yet officially commented on this information and has not reported the reasons for the closure. This is surprising, given that the series was in the top 10 in various countries after its release in November, and in December the service reported 87.9 million hours watched.
