Why slippers can be a bad gift

In Russian culture and traditions of other countries there are no strict prohibitions or instructions about such a gift.

At the same time, among superstitious people there is a rather vague idea that giving slippers is either impolite or dangerous for the new owner or his relationship with the donor.

There are two reasons why indoor shoes could turn into questionable present.

At the excavations of ancient Russian necropolises, found shoes made of thin leather that do not have devices for attaching to the foot.

Such shoes had no signs of wear, that is, they were sewn exclusively for burial. And, judging by the appearance, it looked like slippers. Perhaps the roots of superstition come from here - supposedly a gift can serve as a kind of death wish.

In addition, indoor shoes can be associated with death due to the expression "In white slippers and in a coffin." This is a line from the poem "Baptism"

Soviet poet Nikolai Antsiferov, who became winged and even entered into the vocabulary of verbal aggression as an expression of contempt and hatred.

Harming relationships

This reason applies to any shoes, not specifically slippers. But in the future, it also applies to them.

According to one version, if a person presents shoes to another, the gifted one soon leaves his life - the relationship is destroyed.

In another version, the ban only works if people are in a romantic relationship, but not together live. Since the shoes “should be paired”, if the partners do not come together, then soon after such a gift they should part.

Is it possible to donate slippers

Unlike knives, for which you can pay a symbolic amount, the people did not come up with ways to bypass the "evil eye" from a gift in the form of slippers.

If you plan to present slippers to a superstitious person who may take this as a hint of a death wish, it is better to consider other presentation options.

At the same time, many people, especially young people, have not even heard of such a sign and certainly will not perceive the gift as an expression of evil intentions. Especially if you really need slippers.
