Sapphire is one of the hardest minerals, so it's no surprise that it's used to protect the screens of premium watches - not only by Apple, but also by other brands like Fitbit and Samsung.

Blogger JerryRigEverything, known for testing technology for strength, decided to compare the strength of the sapphire coating on the screens of the Apple Watch Ultra, Galaxy Watch 5 And Garmin Fenix ​​7. Pure sapphire is close to diamond in strength: objects with a hardness of 8-9 points on the Mohs scale can scratch it, while ordinary glass is scratched at 6 points out of 10 possible.

It is known that to protect the cameras of smartphones, Apple does not use pure sapphire, but a composite material that is slightly inferior to the mineral. As for the Apple Watch Ultra, the JerryRigEverything test showed that it is indeed a sapphire - albeit with reservations.

On the Apple Watch Ultra, traces appeared when using tools of level 6-7 on the Mohs scale, and level 8 brought quite obvious scratches. The Galaxy Watch 5 had similar scores, although the scuff marks from levels 6 and 7 were less pronounced. Garmin Fenix ​​7 showed the best result: up to level 8, it was not possible to damage their glass in any significant way. This indicates that the sapphire in them is the purest of the three models.

The video confirms that all three manufacturers tell the truth about the use of sapphire in their watches, but Garmin wins on the purity of the mineral.
