Podcast "Listen, it's easy": what is impressionism and how to go to museums with pleasure
Miscellaneous / / April 05, 2023
We tell you how not to confuse Monet and Manet and develop artistic taste.
In mid-October 2022, environmental activists came to the London National Gallery and flooded tomato soup painting by Van Gogh "Sunflowers". And then they smeared their palms with superglue and stuck to the wall. This vandalistic performance did not last long. The girls were arrested. The painting was not damaged - the canvas was protected by special glass. With their action, the eco-activists wanted to draw public attention to the fact that millions of freezing and starving families cannot afford to warm up a bowl of soup.
Less than 10 days after the incident with the "Sunflowers" van gogh, like other eco-activists in Potsdam, Germany doused mashed potatoes painting from the series "Haystacks" by the Impressionist Claude Monet. This time, the protesters called for thinking about climate problems. Again, the canvas itself was unharmed.
Situations like this happen from time to time. True, with the advent of sufficient protection measures, it is more and more difficult to destroy the painting. And we can still admire them. In this edition, we will talk about painting and artists, including Monet and Van Gogh, as well as how to go to museums for inspiration.
