Orgy, repentance and a lot of Nastya Ivleeva. Is it worth watching the series "Monastery"
Miscellaneous / / April 04, 2023
The story of a slutty girl on her way to faith promises to be one of the most discussed projects of the season.
November 19 at Kinopoisk will premiere the series "Monastery". The main roles in the project were played by Nastya Ivleeva (“Bloggers and Roads”) and Philip Yankovsky (“Mirror”, “Afghan Break”). The director was Alexander Molochnikov ("Tell her"). He also worked on the script together with Alexandra Remizova ("Tell her", "Patient Zero").
Critics were given the first two episodes.
"Monastyr" tells about the Muscovite Masha. The wife of a billionaire, she spends all her time partying, casual sex and drinking. Once Masha has group sex with a friend and two men. One of them captures what is happening on camera and uploads the video to the Internet. Later, Masha finds out that her accounts are blocked, and her partners have already been "punished" by her husband's guards. Fleeing from the punishment of her husband, the main character finds herself at the walls of the monastery. This is her chance to save her life.
Surface characters
The main character leads a dissolute life - this is clear from the first 15 minutes. Then the writers report it a few more times. As if the authors of the series are telling the viewer something like “No, you don’t understand, she’s a whore!” The apogee of "disclosure character "becomes a scene in which Masha tries to seduce the priest to be left in monastery.
But if the main character is not supposed to be complicated (at least at first), then Jankowski's character implies depth. In one of the scenes, Father Barsanuphius is talking to a man who has come for advice. The parishioner claims that he really wants to beat his wife, and even shows a gun with which he is ready to scare his wife. All due to the fact that she does not take a man seriously. At this moment, a flashback begins, from which we learn that once Barsanuphius had a large family, which broke up because of his wife - yes, she also did not take her husband seriously.
Sad? Hardly. The writers are trying to tell a dramatic story in a minute and a half, so they simplify the situation to the impossible. It turns out that a wife can say “well, if anything, I’ll find another” as if in passing, and also whip a man in the face when he is in doubt. Of course, such relationships are possible, but the flashback looks like a satire - everything is so blunt.
At the same time, Father Barsanuphius is far from the worst character. This is the merit of Philip Jankowski, more precisely, his charisma. But even it is not enough in a situation where the emotions and past of the hero are as superficial as possible.
Repeating the same jokes
The main character gives out three jokes per minute. She behaves like a schoolboy on an excursion - absolutely any person and any event force her to leave a caustic comment.
The problem is not only in the quality of jokes (this is subjective), but also in their constant repetition - everything is either about sex or about religion. For example, she regularly hints at her past. Or every 40 seconds "remembers God in vain." Each such episode ends with an awkward pause due to the inappropriateness of the remarks, which in theory should be funny. But on the tenth time, it's not funny at all.
Doubtful visuals
"Monastery" has a very bright and varied video sequence. Expensive life in Qatar, beaches, bustle at the airport, monasteries, landscapes, portraits - an assortment for every taste. The cameramen did a great job, but the editing table turned the beautiful shots into a kaleidoscope.
Perhaps, from the third episode, the pace of the narrative will decrease, and then the pacifying landscapes and beautiful frescoes will stay on the screen longer. In the first two episodes, they serve only as an interruption between different scenes with Nastya Ivleeva.
Speaking of the visual side, it is worth highlighting the episode from the first series in which Maria dances high - a bunch of effects and duration make the scene as disgusting as possible. If there was a task to cause hatred for drugs or a heroine, then it failed - there was only a desire to turn off the series and forget about what they saw. It kind of reminds me of the basketball scene in Catwoman.
Really bad music
Playing some terrible song about religion in the background for a touching moment in a monastery is a dubious decision. The upbeat tracks within the church are also reminiscent of YouTube's free music base. Perhaps the matter is in economy, but the musical sequence turns out to be so inexpressive that you want to turn off the sound.
It is interesting that Daria Charusha is responsible for the soundtrack. In "Hardcore" by Ilya Naishuller, she managed to collect assorted tracks suitable for the film, but in "Monastery" there are too many misses.
Ivleeva very much
Nastya Ivleeva has a gigantic fan base, so it is quite understandable why the series becomes her benefit. It is more difficult to understand the reasons why the project should be of interest to a person who is not in love with the actress. She grimaces, exposes herself, talks - and all this is more like her sketches, and not part of a separate project.
Bad music and boring characters make The Monastery too weak a drama. At the same time, the comedic component also fails due to a meager set of topics for jokes. A dissolute girl and monks, tears and laughter, skirts and cassocks - images that do not fit together in any way.
It is possible that the series will change from the third episode. The sinner will understand that she lived wrong, and the abbots of the monastery will help her find herself. The problem is that such a complex topic requires a thorough approach with a lot of detail. They may appear, but it is not clear why they are not in the first two episodes. The spectator, thirsting for the spiritual rebirth of the heroine, simply will not endure transformations. But if you love Nastya Ivleeva, then be sure to watch The Monastery - there are a lot of actresses here.
