PayPal adds secure login without passwords
Miscellaneous / / April 04, 2023
So far this only works with Apple devices.
PayPal officially announced about standard support FIDO for authorization without passwords. It allows you to use cryptographic passkeys that are generated locally on the device associated with your account to verify your identity. Attackers will not be able to obtain such keys through phishing, which makes this solution more secure than regular passwords.
The new PayPal sign-in method is now available for users in the US, with plans to roll out to other markets in early 2023. For now, this option will be available to owners of iPhones, iPads, or Macs running iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, and macOS Ventura, respectively.
As long as the user has an iPhone, he will also be able to log in on his other gadget: for this, it will be enough to enter the PayPal login and scan the received QR code through the iPhone camera.
Earlier on FIDO support in Android and Chrome announced Google, but the feature is currently in beta. It will become publicly available before the end of the year - probably after that the new PayPal authorization method will work on Google platforms. Microsoft needs to step up too.
