Paris bans the rental of electric scooters. Maybe it's time to go to Russia?
Miscellaneous / / April 04, 2023
Such transport is really convenient, but its safety and environmental friendliness are doubtful.
Residents of Paris in the referendum spoke for the ban on electric scooter rental services. Among the 103,000 citizens who voted, 89% supported the ban, and the city council said it would not renew the licenses of three electric scooter operators in the city - Lime, Tier and Dott. It is not planned to prohibit the use of personal two-wheeled vehicles.
Safety concerns are cited as the main reason for the ban. With the permission to freely rent electric scooters through apps in 2018, more and more complaints began to be heard. So, scooter drivers collide with pedestrians and drive at high speed, including on sidewalks in the way of passers-by and against traffic.
Gradually, they tried to resolve the situation by reducing the number of distributors to three, introducing speed limits of up to 10 or 20 km / h, depending on the area, and designating special parking spaces. Also, users were required to wear reflective vests, and a fine was introduced for driving in the oncoming lane.
But even so, in 2022, three people died and about 460 were injured after collisions with electric scooters - in Paris alone.
At the same time, the city council questioned the environmental friendliness of such transport. Electric scooters quickly break down and go to waste. The final decision was given to the residents in a referendum. Giving her vote for the ban, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, also noted that this transport is very expensive: for a 10-minute trip, you need to pay 5 euros.
