Miscellaneous / / April 04, 2023
We tell you how to properly prepare the beds for the next season.
When exactly to fertilize in the fall
There are no strict deadlines. Choose any time from the end of August to November. The main thing is to be in time before the arrival of severe cold weather, otherwise you simply won’t be able to dig up the frozen soil after fertilizing.
You can carry out the procedure immediately after harvesting. For example, they collected potatoes, applied fertilizer to the garden, dug up the soil. This approach is practiced by many summer residents, because it saves time and effort.
What fertilizer to apply in the fall
You can choose mineral fertilizers, which are sold in the form of powders or granules. They are convenient and easy to use. If you are not a supporter chemicalsopt for organic products. Both in those and in others in different concentrations contain substances that enrich the soil.
1. Mineral fertilizers
The easiest way is to choose a ready-made nutrient mixture for autumn use. Such products can be found in stores and garden centers. There are universal fertilizers that will fit for the subsequent cultivation of any crops, and there are special ones - for the garden, vegetable garden or flower
flower beds. Consumption rates and dosage vary depending on the manufacturer and are indicated on the packaging.You can make a healthy mixture yourself by finding nutrient components separately in garden centers. Choose fertilizers with a predominant content of phosphorus and potassium. But it is better to refrain from nitrogen in its pure form: until spring it will be washed out of the soil, and your efforts will be in vain. So, for 1 m² of soil you will need:
- 40–60 g superphosphate or 25–30 g double superphosphate;
- 20–30 g of potassium sulfate (another name is potassium sulfate) or 25–30 g of potassium salt.
Put on gloves, pour all the ingredients into one container and mix.
How to deposit
Spread the fertilizer evenly over the surface of the soil, dig it to a depth of 5–8 cm, and then loosen it with a rake. If the soil on the site is not heavy, instead of digging, you can immediately use a chopper or flat cutter and loosen the earth to the same depth - 5-8 cm. The garden does not need to be watered.
2. organic fertilizers
If in spring and summer only rotted manure is used for top dressing so as not to burn the plants, then autumn is the time for fresh. During the winter, he manages to perepret right in the garden. Instead of manure, chicken manure is also suitable.
Compost can also be added in the fall. It will continue to slowly decompose in the bed, and in the spring it will be ready for new crops. Lowland peat can be added to the compost, which contains useful elements, retains moisture and makes the soil looser.
Another option is to use green manure, which restores soil fertility and improves its structure. About how to sow and process green manure, read in our article.
How to deposit
For 1 m² of beds, take any of these options:
- 6–8 kg of fresh manure or chicken manure;
- 10–12 kg of rotted manure;
- 10–12 kg of compost;
- a mixture of 6 kg of compost and 6 kg of lowland peat.
Selected fertilizer spread over the surface of the soil. Dig the soil onto the bayonet of a shovel, breaking up earthen clods. Level its surface with a rake.
