The plot was based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood (by the way, it was already transferred to the screens in 1989). But gradually the project grew and turned into a very cruel dystopia, many elements of which are very close to the real world.

Several episodes of this series were directed by the famous director Barry Levinson. And the scripts were written by Danny Strong, who worked, in particular, on the finale of The Hunger Games. The plot is based on real events that Beth Macy described in her book.
