The neural network received a credit for the final essay for grade 11
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
Just a couple of minutes - and a typical work with three arguments is ready.
HSE Lyceum teacher Mikhail Pavlovets used neural network GPT-3 and "Yandex Translator", in order to generate a final essay in a couple of minutes, which are written annually by all school graduates. The requirements for such texts are simple: 350 words on a given topic, in which the thesis is stated, expanded and supported by three arguments, one of which is literary.
For example, he chose the topic “Why can the achievements of progress, which give a person convenience and comfort, be dangerous for humanity?” The first paragraph went like this:
The achievements of progress, which give man convenience and comfort, can be dangerous for humanity, as they can lead to complacency and lack of critical thinking. As people become accustomed to the conveniences of technology and society, they may begin to take these things for granted and lose the ability to imagine life without them. This lack of imagination can make it difficult for people to challenge the status quo or adapt to changing circumstances.

Further in the text, arguments are given from life and from Aldous Huxley's dystopia "Brave New World". This is just one of the iterations: in another version of the essay, the neural network is based on the novels The Road by Cormac McCarthy and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, in the third version it is based on George Orwell's 1984. Although the result is not perfect, it meets all the criteria FIPI. This was also confirmed by colleagues whom Pavlovets asked to evaluate the essay: both of them gave it a “pass” mark.
At the end, the author asks questions about checking handwritten essays for plagiarism and why such typical essays are needed at all if the neural network copes with them without problems. What do you think? Share your opinions in the comments!
