Icy Europe, which can be fraught with many surprises.
NASA's Juno spacecraft sent new pictures Europa, moon of Jupiter. They were taken during a close flyby of the moon last week from a distance of about 1500 km.
The main image, processed by citizen scientist Bjorn Jonsson, shows the surface at a resolution of about 1 km per pixel, which shows numerous dark depressions, as well as the huge Callanish crater, which began to be studied back in the late 1990s - it is on the right bottom corner.
The second image by Navanit Krishnan shows a region called Annwn Regio. Scientists call this area a chaotic labyrinth of ridges, grooves and cracks in the ice surface.
NASA notes that these images highlight previously unexplored features of Europa's surface, which may shed light on processes occurring in a potentially habitable ocean under a thick ice sheet. crust.
Juno station in 2021 visited Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter and the entire solar system. And next year it will approach the volcanic moon Io.
