How to cover roses for the winter so that they definitely do not freeze
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
Protect even from the most severe cold weather is real.
When to cover roses
Do not rush to insulate flower bushes with the first frosts. Wait until steady cold sets in and for about a week the air temperature will drop to -5 degrees. So the roses will go through the hardening stage, strengthen the immune system and better endure the winter.
What to do before you cover roses for the winter
To help plants survive the cold, follow simple rules.
cut the roses
Do not require special pruning before installing the shelter, only climbing and ground cover roses. It is enough to remove the remaining foliage from their stems.
Other species need to be cut to the height of the shelter. This means that all stems are shortened so that their height from the ground is no more than 50–80 cm. It is not necessary to cut to zero or leave small stumps, otherwise the rose will not have enough food in winter. Autumn pruning does not require any precision jewelry. Just arm yourself with a sharp pruner or lopper and shorten the bushes, and postpone the more detailed shaping haircut for spring.
After pruning, remove all leaves from the stems with your hands or with pruning shears. As a result, you should have completely bare bushes.

Dispose of all plant residues in the trash or burn. They may be the source diseases and pests.
Treat roses for disease
For 10 liters of water, take 300 g of copper or iron sulfate. These funds are best pre-diluted in a small amount of warm water, and then add more to the desired volume. For processing, a 3% solution of Bordeaux liquid or special preparations - fungicides, such as Horus, Fundazol, are also suitable.
Just before covering the roses, spray them thoroughly with one of the indicated compounds, and also apply the product to the soil around the bushes.
How to cover roses for the winter
Carefully collect the shoots in bunches and bend them slightly to the ground. Do not try to lay the branches directly on the ground, otherwise you risk breaking them. It is enough to slightly press on the stems and secure them with a metal bracket or wire.
Above the bush, install several metal or plastic arcs so as to make a protective dome or tunnel. The optimal height of the structure is 50 cm, but for older or massive roses, you can build a frame higher. The main thing is to stick the pins deeper into the ground so that the shelter can withstand strong winds or heavy snowfall.
On top of the arcs, lay two or three layers of agrofiber or one layer of geotextile. Such materials can be found in garden centers and hardware stores. At the edges, fasten the fabric with something heavy - cobblestones, bricks or heavy pieces of metal.
