Scientists from Sichuan University (China) found a strong link between regular meetings with friends in old age and longevity. As it turned out, sociable people live longer. results research published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.
As part of the study, experts analyzed data from more than 28,000 participants in the Special Program for the Elderly in China (CLHLS), which started in 1998. It turned out that daily communication with friends after the age of 80 more than halved the risk of death in the next five years. Only 1 out of 14 pensioners leading an active daily life died during this period.
Less sociable people also win. More infrequent meetings with friends also reduced the risk of death after 80 years. True, with a slightly lower probability. But among those who preferred self-isolation in old age, one in five died.
This link persisted even after controlling for other factors, such as health and wealth, that might have prevented people from leaving their homes.
Researchers believe it's all about socialization. Regular meetings and communication with friends contribute to healthier behavior, increased physical activity and reduced stress.
