Faster, safer, smarter.
Microsoft is working on a modular version of Windows that users can customize to their own needs and depending on the capabilities of their device. About it writes Windows central.
The idea of modular Windows is not new. Microsoft has been trying to implement it since Windows 10X. However, the project was canceled in 2021. It is now known that the company has returned to its implementation, but with an emphasis on AI and built-in compatibility with outdated programs.
The project, codenamed CorePC, is being developed as a modular and customizable version of Windows 12, allowing for multiple form factors. For example, for a more efficient operation of the OS on educational laptops, it will be possible to refuse features for a desktop computer and vice versa.
CorePC will also make the new OS faster and more secure. Separation of the operating system will allow it to be updated in less than 90 seconds, and closed access to partitions will limit interference from users and third-party applications, as on iPadOS or Android.
Also, artificial intelligence will be integrated into Windows 12. Thanks to this, the OS may receive functions that are in ChatGPT-4 - text generation, recognition of objects and phrases in images, and so on. However, some of them require special equipment to work.
According to an insider, an early version of Windows 12 is already being tested internally. It is about 60-75% smaller than Windows 11 and only supports the Edge browser. Its release is tentatively scheduled for 2024.
