Batman's son in Riverdale. What happened to the Gotham Knights series?
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
The CW's new project isn't exactly original, but many comic book fans will love it anyway.
Yesterday was the premiere of the first episode of the series "Knights of Gotham". The screenwriter was Natalia Adams - many know her as the author of "Batwoman" and "Supergirl". Starring Misha Collins (Supernatural) and young actors.
The crime of the century is happening in Gotham - Batman is killed. Everyone will know that billionaire Bruce Wayne has been hiding under the mask for years. Wayne's adopted son (Turner Hayes) does not have time to recover from the loss and survive the shock (he did not know that his father was a superhero), as he and the children of other famous residents of Gotham are accused of killing Batman. The young heirs must find the real culprit to escape punishment.
boring heroes
All the heroes gather around Batman's son. He is young, handsome, rich - and this is where his characteristics end. It turned out to be a completely empty character. It doesn't even seem worth calling him by his first name - he's just Batman's son, nothing else matters.
Even more questions are caused by the relationship of the superhero and his son. The guy did not know who his father was - well, it's okay, it happens in superhero films and TV shows. But gradually it seems that Batman It has nothing to do with the main character at all.
In situations where the show doesn't try to be about superheroes, it turns into a teen drama. Not modern like "Euphoria", but rather in "Gossip Girl", and the original one. Or Riverdale.
At these moments, the characters are at least a little revealed. But if you like teen dramas, then there will be too few of them against the backdrop of superheroes.
Bored darkness
Over the past decade, the CW has produced many series about Gotham. And if the characters in them differed at least outwardly, then the city always remains the same. Operators are not going to invent something new, fixing all the same exposures in almost identical locations.
All action scenes suffer from predictability. The CW series can't compete with the movies because of the low budgets, but they still shove two fights into each episode. Predictable, uninteresting and so faceless that it is impossible to remember a single fight. The gloom in which good people fight bad people has already had time to get bored - it seems that The CW should introduce a ban on fights in the backyards.
Lots of good references
If you consider the "Knights of Gotham" as a game in which you need to guess the characters from the DC Universe, then it was a success. The series has references of any complexity - both for those who watched only "Batman" by Christopher Nolan, and for those who actively read comics. Most of the plot revolves around the Court of Owls, a rather specific organization that does not play a big role in the development of the whole story. So, if you want to listen to the names of meaningless characters and carefully look at the general plans in search of small details that refer to DC, look.
If you think of Gotham Knights as a teen drama that allows you to guess your favorite characters from the comics, then it's not a bad series. True, with completely uninteresting fights, predictable plots and gloomy villains. But if you treat the "Knights of Gotham" as a full-fledged show about superheroes, then it starts to seem boring and secondary.
