Sigma male: who is it and what is wrong with this concept
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
People are more complex than any concept of types.
In the world of worshipers of social hierarchy, at first there were only alpha males and omega males. The former, according to this theory, are leaders; the second are losers. Then they started talking about beta males, which are almost as good as alpha males, but still a little underwhelming. But not so long ago, sigma males entered the chat and completely confused everything. We figure out who they are and why this whole theory with Greek letters is bullshit, or rather wolf.
Who are sigma males
First you need to go back to alpha, as they are represented by subscribers of "wolf" publics and men's communities. Alphas are strong and courageous, charismatic leaders. They always lead the pack, because they simply cannot do otherwise. Beta and the rest of the alphabet of males are themselves in a subordinate position, simply because they are not alpha. The latter are the most attractive to women, but at the same time they are often unable to build relationships, since nature calls them to fertilize as many females as possible.
Sigma males, in short, are the same as alpha males, only they do not flaunt their status. They generally exist outside the hierarchy, they do not want to fit into it in any way. Sigma males generally avoid people, although they are okay with them, they like to be alone. And they reach the top not because they are the loudest and are ready to fight for their position in society. They are just leaders by default. Women lining up for them to get at least a little attention.
Sigma can be confused with omega due to the apparent isolation. But the latter become renegades, because society does not see more in them, although they would like to participate more actively in all events. And so they are offended and sad. Sigmas simply do not want to break into the thick of social events and are absolutely satisfied with life. And the popularity itself will overtake them, because they are so good.
Sigma males are generally not like everyone else. They avoid everything mainstream and make decisions regardless of whether anyone likes them. Representatives of this category are self-sufficient, but flexible: they can, if necessary, fit into the hierarchy in different roles (but, as we remember, they easily take leadership even alphas). Sigma sets ambitious goals and achieves them.
In general, these are such lone wolves, strong and courageous, who do not need a pack to do great things. But if they consider it necessary to temporarily be in it, they will easily try on the role of alpha, and then again go into the shadows.
What's wrong with the concept of sigma males
The description of sigma males sounds appealing. Probably many would be pleased to place themselves in this category. They are as cool as alpha, but this does not need to be confirmed in any way. To the question "What did you achieve?" you can always answer: “Yes, I just didn’t want anything like that. Now, if you want…”
You can finally do what you like, without regard to public expectations. In essence, the status of a sigma male is the ability to accept oneself as one is without relying on someone else's. OK. Because you are already cool, and you don’t need to present evidence for this - except perhaps for yourself.
However, there is a weakness in this concept. If the sigma male is not like everyone else, then how did a whole group stand out with its own name and characteristic features? Turns out he's not that different. Yes, and it is impossible to exist completely apart from the hierarchy, if you recognize it.
People live together, hence many of our features. For example, we tend to join the opinion of the majority, not because we do not have our own thoughts. But because an unpopular point of view can lead to falling out of society. In ancient times, being expelled from a tribe or village meant death. Now the consequences may be different. However, to go across crowd, you still need to be in it.
It is important to stop typing people and expect them to act in accordance with the assigned category. A person has the right to live as he wants, if he does not harm anyone, because he can, and not because he is a sigma male.
Why in general the concept of alphas, omegas and other letters does not work
The idea of males with Greek letters is based on a study of the hierarchy in wolf packs. Allegedly, they have alpha leaders, omega subordinates, and this is unshakable. Moreover, both the alpha male and the alpha female are at the head at the same time. Betas can replace them. Well, omegas have nothing left but the lowest position.
However, there is a but: at first, scientists observed animals in zoos. And in the wild, an alpha couple needs omegas to get them. give birth. That is, a flock is a mother, father and their cubs. Naturally, they are in a subordinate position. And alphas do not have to fight for their status at all, it is really given to them by default. But by no means for personal merit, but simply as it is.
And with lone wolves, the situation is not so romantic. They are presented as ferocious beasts who do not need a pack to provide themselves with food. In fact, the “collective” is easier to hunt, to defend too.
That is, common wolf theory does not work even with animals. It is even more difficult with people, because they are forced to join different “packs”: family, class, organization, friendly company. And everywhere they can take different positions - not because a stronger alpha has been found, but because it is so organic and comfortable.
And it is also inherent in people to divide into types and adjoin one of them - the best, in their opinion, of course. Therefore, they proudly refer to themselves as sigma males, or Capricorns, or Napoleons (within socionicsnot in a psychiatric clinic). It may be funny, but it's still pseudoscientific.
So it’s worth reconciling with the fact that each of us is in many ways the same as everyone else. And the easiest way to be unique is to be yourself. Because any person has a set of characteristics that cannot be fit into any concept of typologies.
