Is it possible to give a mirror and how to get around superstition
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
Echoes of ancient legends still frighten people.
The mirror has been surrounded by superstition since ancient times. In Slavic folk culture, this item symbolized boundary between the earthly and other worlds. He was endowed with supernatural power, the ability to show the invisible.
People believed that an evil spirit could live in a mirror or behind it, and therefore, breaking this object, one could bring all sorts of troubles upon oneself. The Slavs were afraid to look at their reflection at night, they forbade pregnant women to approach the mirror and bring babies to it.
And these traditions have passed through the centuries, rooted in the public mind in the form of vague superstitions. They also apply to gifts. It is believed that you should not present a mirror to another person, because it:
- Can "eat" the beauty of the one who receives it.
- It is able to "absorb the energy" of the one who looked into it earlier, and convey the negative to the new owner. For example, if tears, a fire, a dying person were reflected in the mirror, something similar awaits the recipient of the gift.
- It can spoil the relationship of the newlyweds, if you give it to the wedding.
- Able to bring bad luck to the birthday man, if presented for an anniversary.
But, as is the case with many other beliefs, there is no specific explanation for how a reflective surface can harm. So you can safely give mirrors to those who do not believe in the other world and the attraction of failures.
If the recipient is a superstitious person, you can try the method that is used when donating a knife. Let the recipient of the gift give you a small coin - as if he would buy a mirror from you and thus get rid of all the negative effects of such a present.
