Why does everyone love John Wick so much?
Miscellaneous / / April 02, 2023
It seems it's not just about Keanu Reeves.
On March 23, the premiere of the last part of John Wick will take place. The story about a killer fighting crime bosses has a lot of fans around the world. But what is special about her?
This is an honest and well-made movie.
The plot of each of the parts of "John Wick" is as simple as possible. The hero encounters the villains, then looks for a way to get close to their leader, and then enters the final battle.
From the first part of "John Wick" does not try to deceive the viewer. This is a b-movie with all that it implies. Instead of long and complex dialogues, as much action is dumped on the viewer as will fit in the timing. The uniqueness here is not in the idea, but in the implementation - it is brilliant. Perhaps only the Indonesian "Raid" treats fights and shootouts with the same thoroughness as "John Wick".
John Wick is an example of a film that takes longer to rehearse than to edit. The emphasis is on choreography, not post-production. To simplify, the role of stuntmen and actors is more important than the skills of editors and artists.
Not surprisingly, John Wick is not like other action movies. He refuses to use unnecessary edits, so long single takes are used in fights and shootouts. Because of this, the film loses its cinematic gloss with its usual (and long-bored) battles and, as it were, “grounds” what is happening. The scenes feel more natural and alive, and the level of danger that the protagonist faces is perceived as acutely as possible.
The main character is sympathetic
He is not an ideal person, but he has clear ideas about honor and justice. He is opposed by the real villains. In fact, the entire franchise is built on the familiar archetype of the hero and his path. John Wick is Hercules, Odysseus, and Rambo.
Modern cinema uses this traditional motif less and less. IN thrillers and action films, other, more complex heroes come to the fore - you can watch Drive, You Were Never There, or the latest Joker to see a familiar modern hero. Against their background, John Wick may seem too simple and straightforward, but this characteristic does not make him worse. It is clearer, and therefore causes more sympathy.
Everyone loves Keanu
Keanu Reeves - one of the most beloved actors for a huge number of movie fans. Hardly anyone sympathizes more. John Wick is the perfect hero for Keanu Reeves. Laconic, survived a lot of personal and family tragedies, but at the same time unbroken - these characteristics apply to both the character and the actor.
It is also important that the authors of the franchise have never put Reeves in uncomfortable conditions. He is not given unnecessary dialogue and is not pushed into fights in which the actor would look ridiculous.
If you look at Reeves' filmography, John Wick seems like a summing up of several decades. This is Kai from "47 Ronin", and Johnny Mnemonic, and John Constantine - a gloomy hero who fights against the whole world.
Dog justifies violence
Filmmakers know that there are some simple ways to get the viewer emotional. The most important of them are the death of a child and the death of a pet. "John Wick" chooses the second option, so that from the start of the first part, the viewer sympathizes with the main character.
A loss friend also gives indulgence for any cruelty. If at some point it seems that Wick goes too far, then the dead dog is immediately remembered, after which one wants to ask the hero to break a few more bones to his enemies. The arrival of the new dog serves as a reminder of how Wick came to be in this life.
Continuation looks logical
John Wick is an example of a franchise that doesn't flirt with trying to make as many films as possible. The events of each part logically continue the finale of the previous picture, and new heroes complement the complex and multi-stage world of criminal gangs.
Given that the film "Ballerina" and the TV series "Continental" are in production, it can be assumed that "John Wick" will still have an overdose of sequels. However, the first three parts make you trust the writers and producers.
