MacBook Pro will remain on miniLED for now.
Rumors that Apple is preparing to release its first laptop with an OLED display have been around for a long time. Previously was considered, which in the first generation will be an exclusive feature of the Pro-model for 16-17 inches. But this refutes report 9to5Mac citing well-known analysts including Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants and Ming-chi Kuo.
The MacBook Air is said to be the first Mac to switch to OLED displays. This will happen at the beginning of 2024. But the MacBook Pro will continue to come out with miniLED screens for now.
Kuo also offered a possible explanation for why more expensive screens will be used for the first time in the more affordable Air. One of the main advantages of OLED panels over miniLEDs is that they are thinner, which allows thinner laptops to be made. This may be critical for the target audience of the MacBook Air, who will be willing to pay extra for a more compact laptop, while for the MacBook Pro the thickness is less critical.
Probably, Apple will have time to release another generation of MacBook Air with an LCD screen: these are 13 and 15-inch models with M3 processors, the presentation of which expected at WWDC 2023 this summer.
