How to bleach yellowed plastic
Miscellaneous / / April 02, 2023
These five ways will help you save on household chemicals.
Things to remember when bleaching plastic
- Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from harsh chemicals.
- If there are inscriptions on the plastic, make sure that the cleaning solution does not get on them. Some products can simply wash away all the drawings along with the dirt.
- After achieving the desired effect, carefully wipe the plastic with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining active solution.
1. How to bleach plastic with Dimexide
What you need
- Solution "Dimexide" (dimethyl sulfoxide), which is sold in pharmacies;
- cotton pads or melamine sponge;
- sponge for washing dishes or a clean rag;
- latex gloves.
How to do
Wear gloves to protect your hands. Pour a little Dimexide onto a cotton pad or sponge and begin to intensively wipe the plastic surface with it. Continue until the material has lightened to the desired shade (usually takes 5-10 seconds). After the procedure, wipe the plastic surface with a sponge or cloth soaked in water.
If you need to lighten a large surface, break the work into several small areas and proceed gradually: clean one, wipe it with a damp sponge, and then proceed to the next. The fact is that Dimexide is a rather aggressive agent and, with prolonged contact, it can corrode plastic.
2. How to whiten plastic with a developing hair dye emulsion
What you need
- Developing emulsion (oxidizing agent), which comes with hair dye;
- a small plastic container or deep glass plate;
- cloth napkin;
- rag;
- latex gloves.
How to do
Wear gloves and pour the developing emulsion into a plastic container or deep glass dish. Do not take metal containers, otherwise the developer may enter into an undesirable chemical reaction with the metal. Saturate the cloth with the product and wring it out lightly with your hands. Apply the cloth to the yellowed plastic and leave until it brightens. This takes 5 to 15 minutes. Then remove the tissue and wipe the area with a cloth dampened with water.
If necessary, the emulsion-impregnated cloth can be reused to whiten other plastic surfaces.
3. How to whiten plastic with soap and toothpaste
What you need
- Laundry soap;
- grater;
- water;
- cup;
- toothpaste;
- sponge for washing dishes;
- rag.
How to do
Grate laundry soap on a fine grater. Pour the chips into a glass, pour a small amount of warm water and mix thoroughly. The consistency of the solution should resemble thick cream. If the product is too liquid, add more grated soap.
Apply the solution to the yellowed plastic, squeeze the "sausage" on top toothpaste about 10 centimeters long. Using a sponge, mix the ingredients into a mush and spread it evenly over the surface. Leave the mixture for 15-20 minutes. After that, clean the dirt with a sponge and wipe off the residue with a cloth.
4. How to bleach plastic with hydroperite
What you need
- Hydroperit (urea peroxide), which is sold in the form of tablets in pharmacies;
- tablespoon;
- latex gloves;
- deep glass plate;
- water;
- cotton pads or sponge for washing dishes;
- rag.
How to do
Put on rubber gloves. Using a tablespoon, grind 10 hydroperite tablets into a powder. Pour it into a deep glass dish, add two or three tablespoons of water at room temperature. Dissolve the powder completely.
After wetting cotton pads or a sponge in the resulting product, apply it to the yellowed plastic. Leave the hydroperite on the surface until it brightens to the shade you want. This will take approximately an hour. Then remove the hydroperite from the plastic with a damp cloth.
5. How to whiten plastic with vinegar essence
What you need
- Acetic essence (70-80%);
- latex gloves;
- cotton pads or sponge for washing dishes;
- rag.
How to do
Put on rubber gloves. Moisten cotton pads or a sponge with vinegar essence. Apply the product to the yellowed plastic and rub thoroughly until the surface is clean. Then remove the rest vinegar with a damp cloth.
