What flowers are planted in the fall: 10 unpretentious options
Miscellaneous / / September 10, 2022
Some of these plants will start flowering in early spring.
Flowers sown in autumn grow stronger and stronger than those planted in spring from seedlings. And they release buds at least 2 weeks earlier.
1. Narcissus
- When to plant: September.
- Where to plant: sunny or semi-shady place.
Without this flower, it is difficult to imagine a flower bed in early spring. Like many other bulbs, planting it is easy. Make holes that are three times the height of the bulb. Maintain a distance of 15–20 cm between them. Drainage can be put in each hole - river sand with a layer of 1 cm. Place one bulb root-side down in each hole, press it into the soil and cover with soil.
By the way, daffodils can be planted along with tulips or hyacinths. The distance between plants should be 20 cm.
2. hosta
- When to plant: September.
- Where to plant: a place in the shade or partial shade.
Hosta grows into beautiful lush shrubs and will brighten up the most unsightly shady areas of the garden - those where most flowers will not survive due to lack of light. It seems that it can exist without your attention: the host is not demanding on watering, fertilizing and careful care.
Hosta propagates by dividing the bush, and in garden centers you can find pieces of rhizome - they are suitable for autumn planting. Pre-prepare the soil: pour 15 liters of compost for each square meter of the flower bed, dig the soil onto a shovel bayonet and level the surface with a rake. Dig a hole twice the width and depth of the rhizome. Put it on the bottom with the roots down, gently straighten them and fill them to the top with soil. Pour the hosta with water from a watering can with a diffuser nozzle.
Before the onset of frost, do not allow the soil in the flower bed to dry out, constantly moisten it as needed. When the air temperature starts to drop below 0 degrees, stop watering until spring.
3. Tulip
- When to plant: end of September - end of October.
- Where to plant: sunny or slightly shaded location.
Tulip bulbs overwinter well in the soil, so experienced gardeners prefer to plant them in the fall. In addition, by the end of the summer season, the choice of tulips in garden centers is usually much richer than in spring.
The depth of planting tulips is easy to calculate: it should be three times the height of the bulb itself. You can place them in separate holes one at a time or in trenches in several pieces at a distance of at least 5 cm from each other. Before planting, you can lightly powder the pits with dry wood ash.
Place the bulbs on the bottom with their roots down and gently press them into the soil. Then fill it with soil and tamp its surface with the palm of your hand. Do not forget to mark the landing sites with signs so that in the spring you do not accidentally dig up the flower bed along with the bulbs.
4. Hyacinth
- When to plant: end of September - end of October.
- Where to plant: a well-lit place, light shading is possible.
Hyacinth is a bright garden decoration in early spring. Often it blooms even earlier than tulips, and is just as unpretentious in care.
Hyacinths are planted one at a time at a distance of at least 20 cm from each other. The bulbs must first be cleaned of the dry shell.
The depth of the hole should be three times the size of the bulb. At the bottom of the hole, you can pour 1 cm of river sand, which will remove excess moisture and prevent the hyacinth from rotting. Lay the bulb with the roots down, gently press it into the ground and cover with soil. Place a sign on the flower bed that will remind you that you planted hyacinths in this place.
5. Delphinium
- When to plant: October November.
- Where to plant: a well-lit place and a calm place.
Delphinium flower stalks can grow up to 2-3 meters in height. Therefore, plant it where it will not shade other plants. In the flower bed, make grooves about 1 cm deep, distribute the seeds in them and cover with soil, slightly compacting its surface with the palm of your hand. Instead of grooves, you can make holes 1 cm deep at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other. Put a few seeds in them and also cover them with soil, tamping it with your palm. In both cases, the crops must be covered with spruce branches, and removed in the spring when shoots appear.
If you sowed the delphinium in furrows, thin out the seedlings, leaving 50–60 cm between plants. And if in the holes - remove the weak sprouts, leaving one of the strongest in each.
6. Godetia
- When to plant: end of October - beginning of November.
- Where to plant: sunny place.
Even novice gardeners can grow this unpretentious annual. Wait until the soil on the site begins to freeze slightly, and start sowing - so the Godetia will not have time to germinate in the winter and die.
Scatter the seeds over the surface of the flower bed. From above, cover them with soil with a layer of 0.5 cm. Then pour 7–10 cm of dry peat. In the spring, with the arrival of heat, the peat mulch will need to be carefully removed with your hands, water the soil and cover the crops with non-woven material.
After the seedlings appear, the sprouts are thinned out so that 5–10 cm remain between them. From this moment, about 2 months will pass, and you will see the first flowers, which are also called garden azalea.
7. Cornflower
- When to plant: end of October - beginning of November.
- Where to plant: sunny place.
For a long time, this flower was considered exclusively field, but today there are many garden varieties of different colors - blue, white, yellow, pink, burgundy and even almost black. A cornflower sown in autumn will bloom next summer. And perennial species will decorate the flower bed for several seasons in a row.
The plant has a tap root, which can be damaged during transplantation, so sow it immediately in a permanent place. Generously spread the seeds over the surface of the soil, cover them with soil in a layer of 1–1.5 cm and tamp it with the palm of your hand. In spring, seedlings need to be thinned out: between tall cornflowers, leave a distance of 5-10 cm, between undersized - 20 cm.
8. Primrose
- When to plant: end of October - November.
- Where to plant: place in partial shade.
For germination, primrose seeds need stratification - staying in the cold for several months. Of course, you can fool nature and keep them in the refrigerator. But it is much easier to sow primrose directly in the ground in the fall and see the plants in early spring. By the way, it blooms one of the first, when nothing really grows around.
Level the soil in the flower bed and spread the seeds over the surface - you can do this randomly or try to stick to certain lines. Sprinkle the crops on top with a thin layer of soil - 5-10 mm. When you see seedlings in the spring, thin them out. Remove weak sprouts, leaving a distance of 15–20 cm between strong specimens.
9. gypsophila
- When to plant: november.
- Where to plant: a sunny place where water does not stagnate.
These delicate white flowers are often found in bouquets and herbariums. Growing a gypsophila is not at all difficult, as is caring for it. Wait for a steady light frost to come before planting.
Gypsophila seeds are very small, so for convenience they can be mixed with dry river sand in a ratio of approximately 2:1. Level the soil well in the flower bed and scatter the seeds over the surface. You can do it randomly or try to stick to a certain "pattern". Lightly compact the crops with the palm of your hand, and sprinkle a thin layer of sand on top - 5 mm is enough. Insulate the flower bed with a “blanket” of dry foliage 20-30 cm thick - such a mulch will prevent the seeds from freezing in winter.
In the spring, when the snow melts and the positive air temperature is established, remove the shelter. When seedlings appear, thin them out: remove weak shoots, leaving a distance of 2–3 cm between plants.
10. Aster
- When to plant: november.
- Where to plant: a sunny place where water does not stagnate in the ground.
It may seem strange, but you need to sow this flower when the ground starts to freeze. In the ground, make grooves 2 cm deep. If you plant an aster in several rows, keep a distance of at least 10 cm between them. Spread the seeds at the bottom of the grooves. You can sow the aster thicker to increase the chances of germination. If the soil is very frozen, cover the crops with ready-made soil - for example, universal or for flower seedlings. In the spring, when seedlings appear, thin them out, leaving a distance of 10–15 cm between plants.
