We chose the 10 best shots: from the first selfie in space to the first steps on the moon.
Photographer Andy Saunders has been working through a catalog of thousands of footage and footage from NASA's Apollo missions over the past few years to piece together the historical record of travel to the moon. All his work has recently been completed release Apollo Remastered books.
Saunders restored and enhanced unique shots on film, most of which were underexposed. Painstaking work and literally pixel-by-pixel restoration of the picture made it possible to return the lost history and show it to everyone.
Astronaut Charles Duke, who landed on the moon as part of the Apollo 16 mission, notedthat these frames accurately reflect the events that remained in his memory after the flight. Here are just a few of the photos.
1. James McDivitt docks with the Lunar Module on Apollo 9. Initially, only a speck of light was visible on the underdeveloped film.
2. Dave Scott photographs Russell Schweikart with a Hasselblad SWC film camera during their 1969 spacewalk on Apollo 9.
3. Charles Duke leaves a photo of his family on the surface of the moon, next to which his footprint is clearly visible. On the back, he wrote: "This is the family of astronaut Duke from planet Earth." Landed on the Moon in April 1972."
4. Neil Armstrong captured by Buzz Aldrin moments after their historic spacewalk in 1969.
5. The first photograph of another person in space was taken in 1965, showing Ed White leaving the Gemini IV. Shot by James McDivitt.
