Another step towards a milestone mission.
NASA has released a new video dedicated to the preparations for the Artemis III mission. This is one of the most anticipated projects of the coming years: within its framework, people will again set foot on the surface of the moon. And now we even know the options for exactly where this will happen.
The agency has identified 13 zones that are potentially suitable for landing - and within each of them there are several possible points. In the coming months, scientists will analyze the conditions in each of them and simulate landing conditions to determine the optimal location. All 13 zones are located near the south pole of the moon - previously this region has been little studied.
It is noted that each of the selected zones has its own advantages and disadvantages. So, in these places there are a lot of hills and craters: for astronauts this means more opportunities to explore, but landing will be more difficult. It is also important that all zones will be continuously illuminated by the Sun for 6.5 days - this is how long the mission will last. Light is needed not only to power equipment, but also to minimize temperature differences.
In parallel with the study of landing zones, NASA has already developed a new lunar rover and has begun to create spacesuits for the crew of Artemis III.
While the exact timing of the launch of the mission is not disclosed. Initially she planned for 2024 (the plan for 2018 indicates the old name - Exploration Mission 3). In 2021, her moved Now the launch will take place no earlier than 2025.
But the launch of the Artemis I mission will take place in a week: on Monday, August 29th. This is an unmanned flight of the Orion spacecraft: the device will spend three weeks in space, of which three days will be in a retrograde orbit of the Moon (that is, it will move in the opposite direction of the satellite's rotation).
