In August, the largest star shower Perseids will pass in the sky over Russia
Miscellaneous / / August 02, 2022
This is one of the brightest astronomical phenomena of this year.
On the night of August 12-13, the inhabitants of the northern hemisphere of the Earth will see the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Starfall is best seen before dawn. Up to 100 shooting stars will be visible in the sky every hour.
Indeed, astronomers warnthat the visibility of the Perseids this year may be prevented by the full moon, which will also fall on August 12.
The number of meteors during the peak can reach from 50 to 75 per hour. Such particles are formed thanks to the remnants of the trail left by comet 109P / Swift-Tuttle, which approaches our planet once every 135 years. Its particles, the size of a grain of sand, burn up in the earth's atmosphere every year, forming the so-called star rain.
The most favorable conditions for observing starfall are on hills, away from settlements. Astronomers recommend moving away from big cities at a distance of 100 kilometers to avoid pollution of the sky by artificial lighting.
Usually, an increased background of meteor activity is observed a week before and after the Perseid peak - from August 5 to 20.
