International space cooperation is coming to an end.
The new head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, announced that Russia would withdraw from the ISS project after 2024. According to him, the creation of the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS) will become the main priority of the company's activities in manned space exploration.
Other countries will continue to use the ISS, which has already been extended until 2030. Gradual decommissioning will begin in 2027, but research, sending crews and cargo will be carried out for several more years.
Later, after Yuri Borisov's statement to Roskosmos in the official Telegram channel showed "exemplary appearance" of the Russian station from the Energia Rocket and Space Corporation.
At the first stage of deployment, the station will include three modules, in which two people can stay and work. As additional modules are attached at the second stage, the number of station crew members can be increased to four.
The first module of the Russian orbital station is planned to be launched between 2025 and 2030, the rest after 2030. The ROSS crew will be engaged in sounding the Earth, as well as conducting various studies and experiments.
The Russian orbital station is not the first project to replace the ISS. At the end of last year, three companies from the United States announced about plans to launch the Starlab private space station into orbit. Next similar project introduced Blue Origin by Jeff Bezos.
However, all of them have long lagged behind China, which already operates the Tiangong Space Station. Soon the third module and a powerful telescope will go to it Xuntian.
