Miscellaneous / / July 20, 2022
Majestic, beautiful and stupidly funny.
Jury chose winners of the annual Audubon Photography Awards, which for the 13th time awards are given to the authors of the best bird photographs.
The Grand Prix
The top prize went to an American photographer for his photograph of two white-tailed kites. In this frame, the father (the one with the bright chest) caught a vole and hovered in the air so that his son could intercept the prey. The author studied the habits of these predators for three years before he managed to get the perfect picture.
Best Amateur Shot
The author of the picture was walking along a narrow mountain path when he saw a Western American grebe with chicks on its back. The father brought them a fish, and the children began to fight desperately for it, while the mother noticed the photographer and looked directly into the camera.
Best Professional Shot
In the photo - a white-tailed partridge, popularly known as a mountain chicken. The author stumbled upon her after many fruitless campaigns - and almost missed her, she merged so well with the terrain.
Winner in the nomination "Plants for birds"
The author planted scarlet lemon balm under the office windows. The flowers attract young hummingbirds, and when they fade, insects and snails live in the seed heads. This bird used this natural feeder to its advantage.
Winner in the nomination "Fishermen"
On a bleak morning, the photographer filmed broad-nosed ducks feeding for almost two hours, until one drake lifted its head and looked straight into the frame before returning to its meal.
Winner in the nomination "Females"
Unlike a photographer shivering under several layers of clothing, the female sage grouse thrives in severe frosts. The author admits that he usually tries to capture pompous fighting males in the frame, but in this case he was fascinated by the intricate pattern on the plumage of the female.
Young Photographer Winner
Initially, two black-bellied whistling ducks were sitting on a palm tree, but one of them suddenly fell. The photographer captured the moment when the second looks into the hollowed out tree with the expression "What an idiot."
