Inland Empire is David Lynch's most difficult film (only the director's debut, Eraserhead, can be compared with it). Not only do the characters here move between times and different layers of the plot, but sometimes the viewer is shown a strange sitcom about a family of rabbits. The picture will definitely not be able to understand from the first viewing.
Although Lynch himself claimsInterview: David Lynch on ‘Inland Empire’ I – The Idea / Parallax Viewthat in the "Inner Empire" is a completely clear and harmonious plot. But the director refuses to give hints.

A certain Monsieur Oscar moves around different locations in a limousine of the Holy Motors corporation. In each new place, he transforms into another image and performs some task. But his goals, like the activities of customers, remain a mystery.
"Holy Motors Corporation" looks like a set of scenes filmed in different genres. Or even the director's stream of consciousness. Although, if you look closely, you can see in all this a hint of the complex relationship between the author Leos Carax and the mass cinematography. But you can not think about it, but just watch the magnificent reincarnations of the plastic actor Denis Lavant. The latter, by the way, is constantly removed from Carax and has become his kind of alter ego.

His talent and obsession attract both Wall Street dealers and Hasidim who are looking for the name of God in the Torah. However, Max himself is gradually losing his mind: he cannot live without drugs and suffers from paranoia.
Almost all the main themes of his future work can be found in the debut picture of Darren Aronofsky: religious overtones, the world through the eyes of an unhealthy person, an obsession with drugs, and even a cyclic plot. At the same time, the director shot the picture for only 60 thousand dollars. But the poverty of the visual series only emphasizes the limited world of the protagonist.
"Pi" is a story about the search for deep meaning, reasoning about the essence of God and partly about mathematics. Although in the first place it's just a picture of the perception of the world paranoid.

The film by Jan Svankmajer retells the plot of the famous "Alice in Wonderland». That's just the atmosphere of a children's fairy tale here was replaced by a gloomy and frightening surrealism. Director Wojciech Jerzy Has made a film based on the book of the same name by Bruno Schulz, which seemed impossible to film. The picture is filled with mysticism and existential experiences. Perhaps here it’s better not to look for logic at all, but simply to plunge into the madness of what is happening and try to understand the feelings of the protagonist.

The plot of this film was invented by screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Moreover, at that time he was not familiar with John Malkovich and chose him simply because the name of the actor sounds funny. The artist himself thought that the author for some reason hated him, but nevertheless agreed to star in the film.
The most important thing is not to think that it is biography Malkovich. In fact, the film is just a surreal story and a bit of a personal drama.

Koyaanisqatsi
- USA, 1983.
- Documentary.
- Duration: 87 minutes.

It may seem unusual that the list of the strangest films is headed by documentary painting. But the work of Godfrey Reggio was shot according to all the laws of classical drama. This is a set of scenes that reflect the interaction of man and nature: from watching clouds floating over skyscrapers, to moving tanks and flying spaceships.
There is no voice-over text in the film, which is traditional for documentaries. But the whole film is accompanied by atmospheric music by composer Philip Glass, which complements the story.
Koyaaniskatsi has two sequels: Povakkatsi and Nakoykatsi. The second part is devoted to the relationship of people, and the third - the impact of technology on the future.
