I never once rolled my eyes at a joke that was clearly played just to get into the trailer. The film successfully silenced a rather jaded MCU fan by offering a story that had it all. without having to sacrifice one's soul to the MCU machine that seeks to churn out stories for future phases.
This combination of tones—daring and deadly, frivolous and romantic—elevates Thor: Love and Thunder, keeping it not only brashly unpredictable, but also emotionally alive.
Thor: Love and Thunder is a return to form for the MCU: a great solo story that's emotional, gripping, and damn funny.
The film isn't perfect, but for the fourth installment in the franchise, Love and Thunder illustrates the new directions a character can take while still being fresh and exciting. Luckily, we don't get a lot of cameos that make less sense in terms of plot and serve more as easter eggs for the future of the MCU.
Thor: Love and Thunder is held back by a formulaic plot and inappropriate handling of secondary characters, but succeeds as the MCU's first romantic comedy thanks to Chris Hemsworth and Natalie's chemistry Portman.
The impressive mix of tones and styles that director Taika Waititi used in Ragnarok is pretty much enduring. failure in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is not as funny as it should be, and not as exciting and romantic as it should be to be.
Chris Hemsworth still makes a strong muscular impression, but the stakes never get special poignancy in a film that is too busy with jokes and tomfoolery to tell a gripping history.
Love and Thunder doesn't live up to the incredible stories that inspired it. It doesn't draw on its director's style or maximize the dramatic potential of the cast, feeling more like a superficial, unsatisfying mashup.
Thor: Love and Thunder is full of gags and jokes, it advertises itself so loudly as "fun!" that it stops being fun. Such is the case with Waititi, a gifted director who, now that a light touch is no longer required of him, seems to have forgotten what to do.
