Dream, know yourself and take tests. 8 steps to help you find the right job
Miscellaneous / / June 30, 2022
1. Visualize the target
Visualizing your goal helps you achieve it. For example, this psychological technique useThe Effect of Goal Visualization on Goal Pursuit: Implications for Individuals and Managers / SSRN Olympic swimmers and sales managers to fulfill their plans and set new records. The dream job is a target suitable for visualization.
To get started, study the labor market and write down industries in which demand is growing. For example, take a look at "Atlas of new professions"- an almanac of the specialties of the future, compiled by Skolkovo experts for the Russian market. Or take a look at the statistics sections on job aggregator sites. Compare the dynamics of vacancies and resumes - in areas where the resume is much smaller, the chance of getting a job is higher. Do not forget: the profession should be in demand, well paid, but most importantly - loved. Otherwise, burnout, stress and other consequences of living in someone else's routine cannot be avoided.
Now to visualization. One of her options is to create a “map” of your desires on paper. For example, take a sheet and write in a chaotic manner your requirements for a future profession. How much do you want to earn, what schedule would suit you, what would the office and colleagues look like. Add as much detail as possible to this cloud. Be specific: not “I want to earn a lot”, but “I want to earn at least 70,000”. Then take the markers and highlight the priority indicators with color. This way you get a picture of the perfect job and you will know exactly which offers to filter out and which ones to pay special attention to.
Don't be afraid to dream, but don't get too lost in your fantasies - when imagining employment, mentally go through all the stages. Meeting new people, working with unfamiliar equipment, criticism from superiors - this cannot be avoided. And by thinking ahead about how you will cope in these situations, you will prepare for real difficulties and stop turning down offers out of fear of failure.
2. Create your profile of the applicant
At the first interview you will be asked: "What are your strengths?" So that the answer does not take much time, think about it in advance and draw up your portrait of the applicant. Being objective in this kind of self-assessment is very difficult. Use outside help. For example, turn to family and friends and ask around what professions they see you in and what qualities they consider defining you. But here, too, be attentive to the answers: relatives are not always able to appreciate your “working” side.
Such opinions are good as additional filters in decision making, and they will also help you gain self-confidence. But there are other ways to get rid of doubts - for example, career guidance tests.

Psychological tests are a reliable and already traditional career guidance tool. But "astrological forecasts", where the client is given a list of professions after filling out the form for ten minutes, do not really work. Really useful tests can be done by career counselors and psychologists.
But it’s better to immediately go to an employment center specialist, and here’s why. Psychological tests during vocational consultations help to conduct a certain revision of knowledge, to understand what potential has not yet been realized. At this stage, you can gain confidence. But what's next? It is necessary to orient in the real situation in the labor market. This information is held in the employment center. An up-to-date album of vacancies, prospects for the development of various sectors of the economy and staffing needs in them, state support programs - a career consultant will help you in all these matters. In the employment center, a person receives not only recommendations on the profession, but also a lined career path for the near future.
3. Don't Focus on Your Diploma
71%71% of Russians plan to change jobs in 2022 / Rabota.ru Russians today want to change jobs. Someone strives to earn more, someone just reached his maximum in his position or is disappointed in his current profession. And this is easy to explain: when people chose a specialty 10 or more years ago, many industries and vacancies did not exist in principle. The labor market is actively changing, along with new technologies, new directions and jobs appear. And to develop together with the world around is natural and useful.
Choosing a profession is not necessary for a certificate: many employers today will not even ask you to confirm the presence of a diploma. In addition, new skills and knowledge for the chosen specialty can sometimes be obtained in a few months.
From a data analyst and a tester to a brow specialist and a hairdresser — any career path can be started from scratch, thanks to the national project "Demography». It doesn't matter what diploma you start with.

And in private gardens in some regions, junior groups are opened with the same monthly fee as in municipal ones.

4. Take care of your resume
The portrait of the applicant has been drawn up, now it's time to get a "passport". Compiling a competent resume is a whole art.
Oksana Klimochkina
The first thing that should be in the resume is the “Purpose” section. No one wants to think for the applicant what kind of work would suit him. The person should describe what qualifications and competencies they can offer. Also, the summary should not be too voluminous. A record from my practice is a 12-page resume with a work experience of about 2 years. It shouldn’t be like this: it’s better to reflect only the experience that is relevant to the advertised vacancy. The optimal length of the resume is no more than two pages.
Many employers are put off by resumes with many errors and typos. And it's not just the illiteracy of the applicant: the person did not find a few minutes to check the document. And this already speaks of irresponsibility. Or perhaps a lack of interest in the job. By the way, there is a “secret” method of proofreading text: look through the document from the bottom right corner of the page to the top left. So attention will be focused on each word and its form.
Graduates often state on their resumes that they have no work experience. But in the course of individual consultations, it often turns out that there were both successful term papers and a graduation project with an interesting practical part, and I had an internship at work, and I was a volunteer. This is experience. Everything that may be of interest to a potential employer should be indicated in an “inexperienced” resume.
5. Focus on the positive
Resistance to change is just as natural as craving for it. People are comfortable living out of habit. In addition, any deviation from standard tasks requires effort - and this is where laziness comes into play. The desire for security and energy saving will surely tell the brain a couple of excuses why a new job and its search is a bad idea. But do not dramatize the process of employment.
And internal fluctuations can be the effect of positive-negative asymmetry. Negative information affects a person more than positive information. And single stories of acquaintances about a long and difficult job search will easily drown out dozens of similar stories with a happy ending in your thoughts. To prevent this from happening, remember: everyone has bad interviews. And in general, looking for a job 2-3 months is the average time.
Oksana Klimochkina
Even if the interview did not go very smoothly, you need to relax afterward and say thank you for the work done. Do not scold yourself: every attempt helps to improve. After giving up, you have nothing to lose. Your skills and experience remained with you, as well as your resources: confidence, responsibility, purposefulness. Any feedback from the employer after the interview means that you are interested. Even if the employment did not take place, your resume may end up in the personnel reserve.
Finding a job today is also a job. And it goes through quite certain technologies. If the series of unsuccessful interviews grows, reconsider your preparation for them. An interview is not an exam or an assessment of your qualities as such. Answer yourself two questions: what do recruiters need from you and what do you have. Relate one to the other and present your thoughts persuasively to the employer. And don't overload yourself. One client of mine made it her goal to attend at least five interviews a week. By the end of the second, she felt like a squeezed lemon, and even the neutral reaction of the interviewer at the interview was perceived as a gloomy prospect and failure.
And do not forget to ask a couple of questions at the end of the interview - they will confirm your interest and active position. For example, clarify the details of job responsibilities and learn more about the structure of the organization and your place in this hierarchy. Employers, as a rule, mark applicants interested in expanding their competencies - ask a question about the system of advanced training and employee training.
6. Find new job sources
Large job aggregators can be helpful. But if you already know exactly what area you want to get into, pay attention to specialized Telegram channels. In them, the selection of proposals will be more targeted.
You can find such useful sources through special sites. Just type in the search engine, for example, “vacancies for musicians Telegram channels” and look at the first page of the issue - you will surely find something interesting. Probably, there will also be links to thematic publics and communities of professionals in the chosen field. Subscribe to a couple of such resources will also not be superfluous - in addition to current news and expert insiders, tempting job offers may also flicker there. And bloggers sometimes share useful links. Let's say you're looking for a job in the event industry — subscribe to the public pages of successful agencies and personal blogs of their leaders in social networks. Some companies may directly publish information about the vacant seats in their social networks.
7. Don't be afraid of tests
The practice of test tasks is relevant not only in the IT industry, but also, for example, in copywriting and recruiting itself. Strength tests are designed to help not only employers. For the applicant, this is a convenient way to try on a vacancy for themselves without wasting time on internships.
Oksana Klimochkina
You don't have to be afraid of testing. This is an opportunity to test yourself for compliance with the work. Refusal to complete any test task will definitely alienate the employer. But sometimes it’s not the employer that is hiding behind the test, but the scammer. An honest employer is always open. The name, head, coordinates and contacts of the enterprise or organization must be known. If this information is not available or it is presented in a veiled way, you need to be wary and, for example, look for reviews about the employer from former and current employees.
Also, to recognize scammers, evaluate the test itself. Is it directly related to your future job responsibilities. Whether it takes days or even weeks to complete. Can the result you get be positioned as a separate project or product. If you still have doubts, it is better to first discuss all issues with the employer.
8. Contact the professionals
If possible, sign up with special job search agencies. This is not always a budget option, but HR experts will take care of everything from field proposals to job applications. Sometimes the contract is concluded for a specific time - a week, two or a month, during which the client must, if not get a job, then be guaranteed to receive several good offers.
You can also hire a personal career consultant or go through a couple of pre-hiring sessions with them. The expert will tell you what to look for in vacancies and how to behave in interviews. And it will also help to gain self-confidence and, probably, share useful contacts - career specialists have access to closed channels with vacancies.
You can get these services free of charge at employment centers. Thanks to the initiativeEmployment promotion» national project «Demography» Employment centers across the country are being upgraded. Here you can pass primary career guidance testing and get the support of a psychologist, as well as master the skills of self-presentation. And of course, get free accompaniment career consultants. They will help you find a suitable direction, prepare you for the specific requests of employers and tell you about the intricacies of writing a resume. If necessary, they will be sent for retraining and help to open their own business.
All vacancies offered by employment centers are relevant and in demand in the region where a person lives. And if there is a desire to move, you will be selected options with such an opportunity.
