Russia may be left without Baikal processors
Miscellaneous / / June 16, 2022
Foreign partners do not produce them, and in the Russian Federation there is simply no necessary capacity yet.
The Russian company Baikal Electronics may freeze the project for the release of Baikal-S server processors presented at the end of 2021 due to the refusal of the Taiwanese TSMC to enter into new contracts. About it writes "Kommersant".
According to sources of the publication, batches of already produced processors for computers and laptops Baikal-M also do not arrive in Russia. And putting such a chip into the development of new PCs is now too risky.
A number of large consumers were interested in the server Baikal-S even at the stage of the signal batch. Sberbank planned to switch to these chips if the state would oblige to buy products exclusively on Russian processors. Now, obviously, there will be no servers on these chips in Russia, the sources noted.
As a result, Baikal Electronics may also refuse to release the next generation of Baikal-S2 server processors, for the development of which it received 5.64 billion rubles. as government subsidies.
The company did not comment on this situation in detail, but assured that they continue to work on all projects.
The director of the Promobit company (manufacturer of servers based on Elbrus processors) Maxim Koposov believes that due to the cancellation Baikal-S in the near future, the Russian server market will mainly be supplied with solutions based on foreign chips. First of all, these are Intel and AMD imported through parallel import channels.
Koposov added that now Russian processor developers will face a choice: to reduce the technical characteristics of their devices to ensure the technological possibility of production in Russian factories or sell their developments to foreign partners.
