What are "indicators of happiness" and why determine them
Miscellaneous / / June 13, 2022
An interesting concept based on the financial model teaches us to enjoy life without artificial restrictions.
What are indicators of happiness
This is the idea around which the Personal Moral Inventory model is built. It was invented by workflow futurist Dominic Price. Two things inspired him.
The first is the financial concept of the four-dimensional criterion, according to which, when evaluating a business, one should take into account not only profit figures, but also management efficiency, as well as the social and environmental dimension of work companies. The second is an exercise that members of the elite units use to evaluate themselves and their comrades before going on a mission.
Dominic Price created a model of personal moral accounting to help himself and others find happiness even in the most difficult times. He believes it is very important to stop being distracted by what we cannot do and find what we can do. Also, take responsibility for your own happiness and manage it.
In what areas of life to determine the indicators of happiness
Productivity and income
This category includes everything related to work. How much you work and what reward you get. Do you have a favorite thing. Does it help you provide for yourself and loved ones and lead a life that you like. Are you satisfied with your work mentally?
Personal life
It is made up of various components. Firstly, this includes mental and physical health, how much time you devote to these areas of life. Secondly, it is the impact you have on your family, friends and society in general, how good a person you are.
Ecology
What matters here is how consciously you are about our planet, how much your lifestyle is useful or harmful to the environment. Unfortunately, we don't often ask ourselves these questions.
Vocation
Each of us wants to leave behind a kind of legacy, something that will show that we lived in this world and were able to at least slightly change it for the better. This category is determined by the answers to the questions why you do what you do and how it helps you leave the mark you want to leave.
How to calculate your happiness scores
You need to put one of three marks for each sphere: 1 - everything suits you; 0 - everything is not as good as it could be, but you are coping; -1 - everything is bad, this area should be seriously worked on.
When evaluating, keep three important principles in mind:
- All indicators are relative. You put 0 or 1 depending on what kind of person you want to be.
- You should not engage in self-flagellation and put yourself -1 in each category.
- The main goal of the Happiness Scorecard is to find areas that need to be worked on in order to achieve balance. At the same time, a positive result in one area does not compensate for a negative one in another: wealth, for example, does not cover the neglect of the environment.
Here are the ratings given by the author of the model:

In the category "Productivity and income" - 1. I have a good job and salary, I have a roof over my head, I can safely pay bills. In my personal life, I put myself 0. For the past four years, I have been virtually single and, frankly, emotionally unavailable to other people. Next is ecology. I made more than 100 flights in a year, and this is not the best news for the planet. Here I have -1.
And finally, calling is 0. Not so long ago, I would have given myself a 1. I had a "dual purpose": the impact I had on people through my public speaking, and the precious time I spent with my sister. But in a few short weeks in 2020, when the pandemic hit, everything was gone. And in the months that followed, I struggled to rediscover my purpose.
How to improve happiness scores
In general, this system helps to understand how our happiness depends on the context. And that it does not consist of one only personal life or work. This means that not the best performance in any category cannot dictate our inner feeling of happiness.
It is important to take matters into your own hands here. Look at the areas you scored 0 or -1 and think about how you can raise the score to 1. Don't put off changes until later, start improving your life right now.

Why is it important? Well, after all, the first best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second is today.
If you put your productivity at -1, learn time management. If the ecology score is 0, start to be more responsible about separate waste collection or walk more often.
Whatever you decide to do, first of all, stop defining your happiness in only one category and invest in learning to control it. Our future is not predetermined. It's not written down anywhere, and it's not waiting for us. And how happy we will become in the future depends solely on our actions or inaction in all areas of life.
