Ms. Marvel looks like a teen show with a touch of superheroes. And this is good
Miscellaneous / / June 09, 2022
Judging by the first episode, the story will appeal only to young viewers. But this is what makes the project unusual.
On June 8, the next Marvel Cinematic Universe project started on the Disney+ streaming service. Strictly speaking, Ms. Marvel is the studio's least noticed release. You can just enter the name in Wordstat and see what it were looking forTV series Ms. Marvel / Wordstat about 6 thousand times a month. For comparison: the previous project of the MCU "Moon Knight" has about 10 times more requests.
This is quite logical: most of the series from Marvel told about familiar characters from the films. So it was in Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Yes, and Hawkeye, although it represented a new heroine, devoted half of the time to Clint Barton. Out of this principle only "moon knight». But the favorites of the audience, Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, played there, which immediately attracted attention.
And "Ms. Marvel" can not boast of either top comic book characters or world-famous actors. Therefore, the project is easy to simply overlook. Moreover, there is a feeling that he will have little effect on the events of the cinematic universe. It is known that the main character will later appear in the Marvel movie. But in the series, they will probably only talk about her formation and personal problems, so as not to waste time on this in an expensive full-length movie.
However, it is precisely this optionality that unties the hands of the authors. They got a character without a cumbersome past, and even different from most superheroes in age and status. So they wisely turned Ms. Marvel into a vibrant teen show that has more in common with the conventional "Hannah Montanathan with The Avengers. At least that's what the first episode looks like. I would like to believe that the authors will continue to keep this style.
Ms. Marvel is about young superhero fans
16-year-old Kamala Khan (aspiring actress Iman Vellani) lives in the United States in a Muslim family of Pakistani origin. She draws well and constantly hovers in her fantasies. And the girl is also a fan of the Avengers, especially Captain Marvel. Kamala even sewed a superhero costume herself with the support of a friend and now dreams of winning the cosplay contest at the Avengercon festival. But the parents do not let the girl go, and she has to run away secretly. And to top it all off, Kamala accidentally gains unusual powers.
AT "Falcon Eye» Marvel has already introduced a new generation of superheroes, which is a fan of older comrades. But still, Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld, initially looked daring and prepared: she was an excellent archer and ran into trouble herself.
Now the cinematic universe is completely moving into the world of conditional ordinary people. Kamala Khan is an ordinary teenager who only compares himself to idols in dreams and drawings. She is more like a typical (sometimes even stereotypical) young geeks who prepare for cosplay contests and hang their room with portraits of idols.
And yes, she does have problems. All the same Bishop dealt with the criminal conspiracy of her rich mom's new friend. Khan just faces a misunderstanding of his parents and bullying at school. Strictly speaking, this part has been poorly disclosed so far. Yes, the mother puts pressure on the girl, urging her to live like everyone else, and not plunge into fantasies. But all her phrases resemble clichés, not real conversations. Although, perhaps, this is intended: nothing is more frustrating than the constant retelling of common truths. The stories of Kamala's relatives are very reminiscent of arguments in the style of "And if everyone goes to jump from the roof ..."
School is not clear at all. Apparently, they make fun of Kamala because she forgets all the time. But there is no feeling that the girl somehow stands out from the crowd. And it looks like they won't talk about it in more detail, since her status will change by the end of the first episode.
The superhero part has not yet really reached. But it's likely that the series will keep its light teenage tone going forward: Kamala will try to combine her studies at school and the everyday life of a supergirl. That is, a newSpiderman”, but more local and very much for young viewers.
In part, this is good. Marvel too often tries to make its films and series universal, capturing the entire audience. Therefore, in the "Moon Knight", which could become the darkest project in the MCU, they added childish jokes. Ms. Marvel initially positions itself as teen series, which will not go beyond a small story about a modest girl. This, of course, narrows the audience, but allows you to better reveal the topic.
The series has a memorable visual
Despite the fact that Marvel invests significant amounts in its television projects, it cannot be said that the series of the MCU are any special in terms of production or graphics. Unless, of course, we are talking about gloomy projects Netflix in the style of "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones" (although it seems they have already been thrown out of the general world).
Surprisingly, Ms. Marvel is the first studio project on Disney+, which is different from the rest in the picture. Again, it's all about the main character. Since Kamala Khan constantly draws, the authors visualize all her fantasies. And they do it very cleverly.
For example, a girl and her friend are riding bicycles down the street and discussing costumes for a cosplay festival. In the background, each version of the outfit is shown in the form of moving graffiti. And even the correspondence between the characters pops up in the form of drawings. This makes the picture almost cartoonish, but it does not let you get bored: it is unlikely that anyone is interested in looking at long dialogues of unfamiliar characters if they are not diluted with anything.
There is no need to talk about special effects associated with superheroics. In the first series, about 2 minutes are devoted to them. Most likely, they will look quite primitive, but I want to believe that they will play it ironically. Although it is more likely that they will bet on other components of the series.
According to first impressions, Ms. Marvel is the simplest and even naive series of the MCU. And this, oddly enough, is its big plus. All other projects quickly slid into boring templates of superhero stories. And here the authors seem to want to please teenagers who will find something familiar in the problems of the heroine.
