Six modifications at once, including the option with a solar panel.
Garmin has been ignoring the existence of the Forerunner 200 series since 2019, but that has finally changed. The company released two new smartwatch models at once: Forerunner 255 and 955. Both models feature multi-band GPS and new features including a running workout widget. Forerunner 955 also received a touch screen and solar charging.
Garmin Forerunner 255
This is the more affordable model of the two new products. They are lightweight and have almost the same design as their Forerunner 245 predecessors. The watch is available in four versions: the standard Forerunner 255, the more compact 255S, and two musical models that differ only in size: 255 Music and 255S Music.
The standard 255 has a 46mm screen and weighs 49 grams, while the smaller 255S has a 41mm display and weighs 32 grams. Music models are identical in size. The watch is water resistant to 5 ATM and has an autonomy of 14 days (or up to 30 hours when using GPS).
There's full triathlon support, as well as more accurate multi-band GPS. The new Race widget provides race preparation information, including race predictions, training day weather, and a countdown. There's also a "morning report" feature that offers a summary of the day's weather, workout recommendations, and a sleep report from the previous night.
Models with the prefix Music are distinguished by the presence of a drive for 500 songs and support for Spotify, Amazon Music and Deezer playlists.
The standard versions are priced at $349 regardless of size, while the musical versions are slightly more expensive at $399.
Garmin Forerunner 955
This is a more premium version that does not offer different display options: only a 47mm model is available, which weighs 52 grams. The touchscreen full color display supports Always On mode. A solar-powered option is also available.
This is the company's first solar-powered running watch. This modification provides up to 20 days of use in smartwatch mode, or 49 hours with GPS enabled. All software improvements match Forerunner 255. There is support for music and Garmin Pay.
The 955 Solar variant is priced at $599, while the standard Forerunner 955 will cost $499.
