Global warming has caused people to sleep less

And this is a problem, not just extra free time.
Recently scientists toldthat four climate records were broken in 2021, including the average temperature of the Earth. Now it turned out that global warming can also affect the quality of recreation. Results of the new researchRising temperatures erode human sleep globally / One Earth show that it could already cost us tens of hours of sleep a year.
Earlier studies and surveys suggested a link between higher nighttime temperatures and poorer sleep. Looking for more concrete evidence, the authors of the new study used global sleep data collected from fitness trackers worn by more than 47,000 people. adults in 68 countries from all continents except Antarctica.
The result was the first planetary evidence that rising temperatures disrupt nighttime sleep. This is primarily due to going to bed later and waking up earlier due to the heat. As a result, people are increasingly don't get enough sleepand sleep debt only grows over time.
The authors came to these conclusions after analyzing data from 7 million sleep sessions. They showed that on warm nights with temperatures above 30°C, sleep is reduced by an average of 14 minutes. On average around the world, people lose 44 hours of sleep per year due to sub-optimal nighttime temperatures.
Given that carbon dioxide continues to accumulate in the atmosphere and global temperatures continue to rise, scientists expect this trend to continue and could result in 58 hours less sleep per year by the end of century. Those in low-income countries and the elderly will be hardest hit. Sleep loss was also slightly higher in women than in men.
The scientists add that in developing countries, this effect may be felt more strongly due to the lower prevalence of air conditioning systems. These results are consistent with other climate change projections: the poor will be hardest hit as they have a much harder time adapting to higher temperatures.
