'Stranger Things' creators talk about season 4, comparing it to 'Game of Thrones'

Three storylines, more than an hour of episodes and answers to questions about the nature of the Upside Down.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer in an interview with Deadline uncovered some details about the new fourth season of the series. They noted that the long wait for a sequel would be rewarded with the show's epic scope.
The new season has a much larger scale and a record total episode length.
We jokingly call this our Game of Thrones season because it's so stretched out and that's what's unique or most unique this season.
Matt Duffer
The authors add that the analogy with the "Game of Thrones" is not only in the duration, but also in the number of storylines that develop in parallel.
The Joyce Byers family left at the end of Season 3. They're in California - we've always wanted it to feel like an ET-style suburban aesthetic, which we finally did this year in the desert. We also have a Hopper in Russia and of course we still have a band in Hawkins. So we have these three storylines, they're all connected and sort of intertwined with each other, but they're just very different tones.
Matt Duffer
Ross Duffer noted that starting from season 3, the brothers already knew that the next chapter would be a series of disparate locations, but they did not imagine how big the season would be.
We didn't even realize it until we were about halfway there, just in terms of how many stories we wanted to tell this season. Game of Thrones is something we've been referring to, but it's really a revelation for us as we really wanted to start giving the audience some answers.
Ross Duffer
The show's creators have confirmed that viewers will finally get some real clarity on the exact nature of the supernatural phenomena that have been haunting the people of Hawkins since the show's launch.
When we filmed the first season, Netflix asked us about mythology. So we wrote a gigantic 20 page document that told the whole story in terms of what was going on and what exactly the Upside Down was. And then every season we kind of just peel off the layers of that onion. This season we really wanted to really get to the bottom of it all and uncover some of the answers. But to do it properly, we needed time, so the show got bigger and bigger.
Ross Duffer
Matt added that around the middle of the season, the brothers realized that they would need an extra episode to get to every plot twist they had in mind. Netflix quickly approved this, and each episode was filled with new content.
According to Matt, there are no episodes in the fourth season that last less than an hour. Therefore, the total duration of the show is almost twice as long as any other season. This is one of the reasons filming took so long.
Recall that the first part of the fourth season of "Stranger Things" starts May 27and the second on July 1st. In anticipation of the continuation, you can remember what happened in thirdwhich came out in 2019.
