How to hang a TV on the wall
Miscellaneous / / April 22, 2022
All you need is a bracket, some simple tools and about an hour of your time.
1. Get to grips with the basics
What brackets are
The TV mount consists of a base with a hinge that is rigidly mounted on the wall, a TV adapter and accessories. They are of three types: fixed, inclined and functional. The first ones are the simplest and easiest to install, they are as invisible as possible, but they do not have adjustments and require viewing while sitting in front of the screen.
Inclined are a more advanced version of the fixed. In fact, they have all the same advantages, but thanks to the ability to move the TV up and down, they provide easier access to connectors and allow you to remove glare from the light from the window.
Functional or tilt-and-turn ones are a little more bulky and cost more, but you can not only tilt the TV in height, but also turn it left and right, and sometimes even move it away from the wall. All this makes it convenient to view from anywhere in the room, and also allows you to place the device in the corner.
Which bracket to choose
In the matter of the form factor, proceed from the adjustments you need. Keep in mind that for functional brackets with extension from the wall, you need a solid base so that, under the weight of the TV, the fasteners simply do not tear out from the created lever.
In addition, when buying, you should pay attention to other characteristics. Home is a VESA standard that defines the distance between the mounting holes on the back of the instrument. It ranges from 200 × 200 mm to 400 × 800 and varies depending on the diagonal. On the bracket, this parameter is indicated directly on the package. As for the standard used in the TV, it can be found in the instruction manual or just measure the actual distance between the holes roulette.
In addition, it is necessary that the mount matches the diagonal and weight of your device. This information is easy to find directly on the packaging of the bracket or in the instructions for it. The same goes for TV. It is best if there is a margin for weight and diagonal: firstly, it is calmer, and secondly, this will most likely allow you to use the old bracket after buying a new TV.

Is it possible to do without a bracket
The answer is no. More precisely, you can do without a purchased mount only if you build some kind of simple suspension yourself. This is real, and there are tons of examples available on YouTube.
For example, design from two sections of a profile pipe with grooves, which is screwed to the wall, and the TV with mounting screws is simply put on top. Or frame from the same profile pipe, which is suitable for larger and heavier devices.
At what height to mount
There is controversy over the height of the TV. Manufacturers recommend a height such that a person's eye level while viewing with a comfortable fit is approximately ⅓ of the screen. But this requirement is not mandatory, and you can do as you like.
In the bedroom, the TV can be placed a little higher, so that when watching while lying down, legs and a blanket do not interfere.
It is best to build a mockup out of cardboard or use a box, ask one of the family members to sit on the sofa and visually assess the location of the TV. You can even hold the device itself if you have two pairs of free hands.
What fastener is needed
It all depends on the wall. For brick and concrete, ordinary nylon dowels or metal anchors are suitable. In the case of a wooden base, you can get by with wood screws of a suitable length. But with hollow and soft walls you need to be especially careful: for a gas block and drywall requires specialized fasteners.
In any case, pay attention to the weight that one element can support, and use common sense.
Fasteners are usually supplied with the bracket, but, as a rule, they are designed for solid walls made of brick and concrete. If you have others, you will have to go to a hardware store.
2. Prepare everything you need
- TV bracket;
- fasteners suitable for the wall;
- masking tape;
- package;
- screwdriver;
- wrenches (if needed);
- drill or perforator;
- drill;
- hammer (if needed)
- level;
- roulette;
- pencil;
- wiring detector (if necessary);
- vacuum cleaner.
3. Remove the stand
If you just got TV set out of the package, go to the next step. If the device was purchased earlier and it has already been used with a stand, then you will first have to remove it.
To do this, lay the TV on a flat and preferably soft surface such as a sofa or covered with a blanket. table, and then unscrew the fixing screws on the back panel or bottom of the leg itself and remove it by pulling it out grooves. If necessary, specify the information about this operation in the instructions.
Once you remove the screws, screw them back into place on the TV. This way they won't get lost, and you can secure the stand if you need it in the future.
4. Attach the rails to the TV
Remove the bracket parts from the package and carefully inspect them, referring to the instructions to understand how everything fits together and works.
Attach the adapter or guide rails (the parts that fit on the TV) to the slots on the TV. Back panels rarely have a flat surface, so the guides are usually not screwed directly, but through plastic or metal barrel grommets.
If the bracket is universal, use the holes that fit the VESA standard of your TV. Select the screws of the required size and length from the kit to the bracket, and do not throw away the rest. They may come in handy in the future when you change your TV to a new one.
5. Try on the bracket
Temporarily put the mount on the rails and attach the entire assembly to the wall. Mark the top and center of the bracket with a pencil.
If there is someone to hold the TV, then now is the most ideal moment to determine the installation height.
6. Markup
Remove the base from the bracket and attach it to the wall. Align strictly horizontally with a level and measure the location of the holes. In order not to stain the wall with a pencil, first stick a masking tape in the attachment points.
Some brackets have built-in bubble levels. Unfortunately, they are not always accurate, so it is better to use a separate one additionally.
If there is nearby socket - be sure to make sure that none of the holes will fall on the cable line. With proper laying, they are always in the center of the outlet and go up or down. If you are not sure, check the circuit if available, or use a special wiring detector.
7. Drill holes
If you have a wooden base, skip this step and move on to the next one.
Make holes in the wall with a drill suitable for the selected fastener diameter. In order not to drill too much, mark the desired depth on the drill by wrapping masking tape around it.
To collect dust, use a vacuum cleaner with its hose next to the hole, or take a regular bag and stick it with masking tape under the drilling site.
When the holes are ready, remove dust from them with a vacuum cleaner or a screw, and then try to insert fasteners inside and make sure that the depth is sufficient.
8. Fix the base
If required by fasteners, place dowels in the holes and carefully hammer them flush with the wall surface. Attach the base of the bracket and fasten it with screws using a screwdriver or wrench.
First fix one of the screws in the center so that the base will hold but move. And then align it with a level and firmly tighten the remaining screws.
9. Connect cables
Connect the network cable, HDMI, Internet, antenna wire and other necessary communications, because after installing the TV on the wall, this will be problematic or even impossible.
10. Install the TV on the base
Take the device - best of all together with an assistant, especially if it has large diagonal panels - and install it on the mount. Usually, this simply requires hanging rails or a hinge onto the base.
At the end, be sure to lock the detachable part of the mount on the base so that the TV does not fall if you accidentally move the bracket. Most often, to fix it, you need to pull on the special tabs of the latches or screw in two fixing screws from below with a long screwdriver.
