NASA showed the "climate spiral"
Miscellaneous / / March 18, 2022
It is actively untwisted, which can cost the lives of many species.
An entertaining data visualization has appeared on the NASA Climate Change YouTube channel showing changes in the global temperature of the Earth from 1880 to 2021. It was created by Ed Hawkins, a climatologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Sciences (USA), based on climate statistics compiled by NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Research.
The initial temperature at the start of observations is marked with white lines, blue lines indicate a decrease, and red lines show warming. When viewed from the side, it is easy to see that in recent decades the spiral has been actively unwinding. As of 2021, global temperatures have increased by 0.98ºC.
While such a change may not sound like a big deal, a 1-2 degree rise in temperature could have insane consequences for the Earth. Among them are the melting of glaciers, the rise in sea levels, the flooding of certain areas of land and the extinction of animals.
The fact is that eggs require specific temperature conditions for hatching. And with rising global temperatures, some species will no longer be able to breed in the wild, which will gradually lead to their extinction. In the 2021 UN report reportedthat the temperature on Earth will rise by 2.7ºC by the end of the 21st century if people do not take action to curb this trend.
