The Adam Project with Ryan Reynolds is a cute teen sci-fi for Stranger Things fans

The new work of Shawn Levy rests on good jokes, a tribute to the past and the charisma of the actors.
March 11 on the streaming service Netflix released a new fantastic film with Ryan Reynolds and a whole bunch of other famous actors: Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Garner and Catherine Keener ("Get Out", "Being John Malkovich). The platform is leaving Russia, but those who paid for the March subscription will still be able to watch the feed.
"Project" Adam "" filmed by the director "Main character» Shawn Levy. He was also the executive producer of Stranger Things and even directed several episodes for the project. Levy also directed the Night at the Museum trilogy and Real Steel. In a word, he took place as a director of entertainment films designed to be watched by the whole family.
And it seems that in the new work, Levy combined his previous projects - Stranger Things and The Protagonist. On the one hand, there is a tribute to the classics of the 80s and 90s and a nostalgic theme of time travel, and on the other, a very charming Ryan Reynolds in the title role. And this is not the first collaboration of the actor with Netflix - he has already played in their "

12-year-old Adam Reed is having a hard time with the death of his father, who passed away a year ago. Plus, he gets bullied at school. But when a character suddenly encounters his 2050 self, his life changes dramatically.
The heroes team up to find Adam's missing wife, Laura, and save the world. But to do this, they need to prevent the villain named Maya Sorian from taking possession of the invention of Louis Reed, Adam's father, who just came up with the technology of time travel.
The very beginning of the plot, in which the young hero, living an ordinary routine life, suddenly finds himself in the very center of some adventurous events, resembles adventure classics. For example, "Back to the Future" (1985), "Alien" (1982), "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991) and other children's family movies that millennials grew up on. At the same time, the characters themselves remember that Jedi swords, then all the same hero Schwarzenegger, further enhancing the effect of nostalgia.
It's also great that the creators managed to strike a comedy-adventure balance. Well-staged scenes of fights and chases are diluted with really funny jokes. And although you won’t see any miracles of graphics here (in this regard, Project Adam has enough modestly), but you will smile more than once, listening to how the small and adult versions of Ryan bicker Reynolds.
The theme of growing up and the relationship of fathers and children
"Project Adam" is also valuable because it tries to reconcile the old ethics with new. The old-fashioned story about a schoolboy who got into trouble is presented in the form of a story of overcoming resentment towards parents and finding inner harmony with oneself.
For example, the older Adam not only teaches the younger version of himself to fight back against bullies, but also finds the right words to comfort his mother - after all, as a child, he obviously simply did not know how to do it.
In turn, young Adam helps his adult self come to terms with death father and look at relations with him in a completely different way. And this is a good reminder of how sometimes unfinished emotional “litigation” with parents spoils the lives of grown children.
Visual flaws and an unmemorable villainess
Unfortunately, with the "Project" Adam "not everything is so smooth: some flaws in the script and meager locations hurt the eyes. Even the design of the opponents' attire looks ordinary, although the fight choreography is excellent and really exciting.
Luckily, it's the actors who draw attention to themselves. Reynolds, as always, is charismatic and bright, and young debutant Walker Scobell looks very good in tandem with him. Mark Ruffalo looks like he came straight from the setAvengers”: his image is very reminiscent of the intelligent scientist Bruce Banner, if he were also a sensitive, understanding father.
But the image of Catherine Keener is rather disappointing. The authors seem to have missed part of the potential of this actress. It's enough just to remember how devilishly creepy she was in Get Out. But it is not yet possible to say something similar about her Maya Sorian.
When taking on Project Adam, it's best to keep your expectations as low as possible. And then it is more likely that he will allow a little distraction from today's disturbing atmosphere. This is a sweet, moderately silly, somewhat terribly naive, but quite watchable movie.
