Australian scientists believe that this is the legendary Endeavor.
Director of the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) Kevin Sumpton declaredthat his team had located the sinking of James Cook's ship in Newport Harbor off the southeast coast of the United States. It took researchers 22 years to analyze the archaeological evidence and archival materials.
The English navyman James Cook led three expeditions around the world in the middle of the 18th century. He carefully documented his travels and made important corrections to the maps of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, clarified the coastlines of North America, Australia, and New Zealand. An archipelago in the South Pacific is named after him, as well as a strait between the islands of New Zealand.
On the Endeavour, Cook set off on his first trip around the world. The ship, about 30 meters long, originally built for the transport of coal, returned to the port of London after four years at sea. Then Endeavor changed names and owners several times. After a collision with a British ship, the remains of the ship were probably buried in Newport harbor.
In 2016 the participants RIMAP (Non-Commercial Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project) from USA discovered Fragments of Endeavour. Australian researchers have been working in parallel with American colleagues in Newport Harbor since 1999, and now their work has shown that this is Cook's first ship.
RIMAP experts, however, customized not so optimistic. They admit that the wreckage may belong to another vessel.
Sumpton admitted that it is too early to put an end to history. To be 100% sure, you need to collect the last pieces of the puzzle and wait for the conclusions of independent experts.
